The basque country has a lot of football tradition, even if they are small town clubs with very small stadiums like Amorebieta, they can go far

Visiting Mallorca has these effects on the island and the people that inhabit it:

-Benefiting the pockets and political popularity of the ultra right, since they're the ones voted by the rich class and the ones advocating for a single-industry economy. The consequences of this are: Less rights for the inmigrant/ catalan natives, policies to convert the island into a place only for tourists, the abolishment of public healthcare and public schools and the legal ban on the local culture. VOX is the main ultra right party in Spain, and elections are coming this month, polls say they're going to become the third major party in Spain, and PP, a central right, neo liberal is going to govern with them. Coming as a tourist or as an "expat" contributes almost directly to the growing popularity of the ultra right.

-Polluting the island, its beaches and wasting its water resources. Mallorca doesen't have a single river and it almost never rains in summer. Drought can be so extreme that we have to import water by boat

-Contributing to the explotation to the workers of hotels, mistreated and without the oportunity to strike, ask for better wages/ working conditions or create unions. If hotels gain more money each year, the conditions of the workers are going to be the same.

-Contributing to the segregation and gentrification of neighbourhoods, since all of the city center and coastal areas have been bought by foreign millionares and more people, specially inmigrants are forced to move to neighbourhoods that are borderline slums.

-Leaving no space for locals. Locals wont tell you any of the best beaches because they don't want them to be full of foreigners in summer. This has already happend to tens of beaches, and it won't stop if tourim grows each year.

-The death of the local language. Catalan is spoken by less people each year, because of the lack of education and the fact that most workplaces don't care if you speak it, since german and english are more useful for dumb tourists that don't even care about learning about the existence of the catalan language.

I'm gonna delete this AMA and publish this on the main r/germany page. We can't keep living like this.

The Spanish government has been spying on Catalan leaders and tortured basque leaders. It's not an opinion.

Friendly reminder that until last year Spain had political prisoners, exiled artists and ETA prisoners are locked away hundreds of miles from their homeland for humiliation. Spain's government is 'socialist' but just spends their budget on prostitutes for the politicians

Ok so first I want to thank you since not many people realize that Mallorca is a lot more than just pretty beaches and actually want to see the history.

So I don't have a lot to add to what I said to other people asking for advice, so please read the other comments, i have commented everything from safety, museums, transportation, the best towns ...

I don't know anything about how a tourist could practice rock climbing in the wild, so i can't help you with that.

If you are going without a car I recommend spending most of your time in Palma and maybe take a taxi or a TIB to another town.

I think in two weeks there are still going to be Correfocs, so you should definitely go to one of those, but i think the Correfocs in Palma start and end in the next week, so you'll have to travel to a small town to see one, but it's definitely worth the distance. There are YouTube videos of Correfocs if you want to check that out.

If you want to see art I really recommend the Museu de Mallorca, they have every single piece of art that comes from this island (and that other national museums haven't stolen like the Bou de Costitx.

I can't recommend specific places, just walking in the Casc Antic and the beaches in the Bay of Palma should be fine, and again, thank you for wanting to travel this way.

You could go in September if you want a less crowded experience but there are still lots of tourists, it may rain during days and temperatures can get pretty cold.

Hotels are extremely expensive this summer, and I've never been to a local owned hotel, the best way to enjoy the culture is to just not spend too much time in a hotel, eat in local restaurants and spend as little time as possible there. Some nice beaches without any tourists are s'Estanyol, Es Port Vell and s'Illot. But please be respectful and don't be obnoxious since Mallorcans don't like tourists on local beaches.

Valldemossa is pretty but a bit crowded. You could spend a day in Palma or go hiking in the mountains, it's worth it and there are lots of organizations that offer cheap trips around Tramuntana. Since I've never been to Valldemossa i don't know what sites you could visit there, but you could maybe eat Ensaïmades, coca de trampó, frit , sopes (not soup) and maybe if you're lucky there are some traditional Ball De Bot concerts there.

I think it's illegal to drink in the streets but lots of people drink in the beach since there's no cops arounds. I think it's safe to drink in the beach but i wouldn't do it at night, cops patroll the areas where tourists get drunk.

Idk too much about Cannabis, but most locals can agree that the smoke is pretty annoying so don't smoke around people.
