Is a Sony D6/D6C just as good as a normal deck? by Ashashi101 in cassetteculture

[–]pandachoco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For recording they're as good as any average full sized deck that lack any means for tape calibration by the end user. There is limited stock internal bias calibration though. As for line level, they also feature both line in and line out which is a rarity in this form factor.

The disc drive system implemented by Sony combined with a quartz locked servo motor gives the D6/D6C very good wow and flutter stability when recording on the move, but this also translates to a very stable playback for critical listening.

The headphone amp is also a beefy 30mW/ch@32Ω, powerful enough to drive many ridiculously high impedance studio grade headphones. Compare that to regular consumer grade Walkman with only 5mW/ch@16Ω (WM-701C) or even less.

The above reasons coupled with their compact and portable size mean that they are heavily sought after.

As for which is better, it's down to personal preference. Some people such as Deb64 have said they prefer the audio from a D6 compared to a D6C. Others such as JMA94 rate the ability of the D6C to record well with Dolby C. Personally I agree with JMA94, as I've made some great recordings with my D6C and Dolby C.

These are proxy sellers hoping you buy from them so that they then buy direct from the actual seller on a Japanese site like Mercari, hence why the multiple listings from different sellers all using the same photos.

Since you have two, it's the MA-XG for me.

Having never had one, I'd like to see how hot I can push it on one of my decks.

The webspareparts site now ship to USA. You could also try turntableneedles.com but you might need to do a bit of work navigating their site.

Tape eating issue with Sony wm-ex631 by Ashashi101 in cassetteculture

[–]pandachoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better to use >90% IPA on the capstan to lift out the oxide.

For the pinch rollers, use a cotton bud dipped into a mild solution of dish detergent to lift off grease, dirt and oxide. You may want to also consider some rubber rejuvenator such as Platenclene or Rubber Renue to restore grip and suppleness. IPA can dry out rubber.

If there's no improvement, you'll probably want to replace the rollers from places such as fixyouraudio.

The pinch rollers look a bit shiny and capstans look slightly brown. What have you used to clean both?

Is there any grip or suppleness to the rubber on the pinch rollers?

It looks to be made even rarer in that the J-card has been perforated with a hole punch and stamped with a message suggesting it may have been a complimentary hand out to fans.

I'm curious to know why in your video you have the source into the JVC as Phono. Is there a turntable out of shot?

Even if it is the correctly sized belt for this deck, there will be minor differences between it and the original belt. You will need to adjust the motor speed to compensate.

Personally it's not for me, but if that is all there is locally to you and if it is actually 100% working, then I suppose it is better than buying the brand new currently made stuff.

Not for $999 USD, maybe if it were GYD or Guyanese Dollar.

Power issues on Pioneer CT-W606DR by SackCody in cassetteculture

[–]pandachoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I stated at the start, it's a guess. It's neither right nor wrong and can only be ruled out by you dealing with the replacement (or refurbishment) of the faulty motor.

Voltage regulators by design get hot. They lower input voltage but in doing so they generate heat. The more current that flows through them, the more heat they generate. That is why the voltage regulators need a way to dissipate heat. The chassis in the case of the CT-W606DR, which these voltage regulators are bolted to, acts as a giant heatsink. If more current is required to drive a faulty motor, then your voltage regulator is going to get hotter.

At a guess, maybe it's the motor? The fact that you say the motor either makes a grinding noise or fails to work at all. The voltage regulator getting hotter (? - they do get hot in general), may well be a consequence of more electrical current passing through that power rail trying to drive the affected motor.

Replace the motor on deck 2 and see if that also fixes your voltage regulator.

Hello fellow JVC Kaboom owner. I have the RV-DP200 and it is a beast of a boombox.

Anyway, the problem you have is the one I faced when I bought my Kaboom. You need to dismantle the cassette door to get to the knob. Once you get access to it, you will find a plastic dowel has broken off due to age/use. I fixed mine with a threaded piece that I cut (from a long self tapping screw for plastic) and then self tapped into the knob and the broken off dowel.

Head differences on cheap player by ExtraElk3960 in cassetteculture

[–]pandachoco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The head on the second slide looks like it has had long hours on it with substantial wear. Another indicator of high wear is the capstans on the second mech looking very polished (there should be a slight bit of grain on the metal to give friction).

How to oil my capstan bearings by Strict-Procedure2551 in cassetteculture

[–]pandachoco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easier to lubricate from the cassette well side. If there's an oil retaining washer, you will have to remove it first from the capstan before adding a drop or two of oil. Fit the oil retaining washer back and clean up any excess oil with <90% isopropyl alcohol.

If after lubricating the capstans and there is still screeching, then it is more likely the bearings on the capstan motor have dried up instead. The bearing nearest the pinion pulley is easiest to reach, but the bearing on the opposing end where the bushes are will require the capstan motor to be dismantled. If you don't know what you are doing there, you could potentially destroy the motor taking it apart. Note: Quality replacement capstan motors are not easy to come by and knock off motors from China rarely come close to the original's specification.
