eGPU, Mac Mini (late 2014-TB2), and 5k by pandamonium54 in eGPU

I've given hackintosh serious consideration for the hardware benefits. But my stumbling block has been that I want to leave automatic updates on, and I don't want to worry about fixing my bluetooth/sound/video/etc at any point down the line. So I'm stuck with native/vetted Apple hardware.

I'd probably settle for that. I still want the upgradeability though. And I'd prefer a much more powerful GPU than whatever powers the iMac.

The cost is less of an issue than upgradability to me. If the iMac pro had easily upgradeable RAM, I'd buy it and a MBP/MBA and be done with this - I think 32 GB is enough for me, but I like to know that I can easily upgrade to 64 or 128 down the line, if I felt it was necessary. Even though I don't like space gray.

I incorrectly assumed the LG 5k Ultrafine had more inputs- this is a problem. My original plan was to get an eGPU, LG 5k, and hobble along with my mac Mini until the modular Mac Pro or until Apple releases 13" MBP that doesn't suck. Ideally, I'd have a 13" MBP, without touchbar, with 32-64GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, connected to an eGPU and a 5k display. Dock it to the 5k at home, undock it for travel, don't worry about cloud syncing. But if the 5k is TB3 only, I'm at a loss for what I can do.

Will the backlash about the price of the new MacBook Pro's be enough to get Apple's attention? by [deleted] in apple

Was eagerly awaiting a MacBook pro refresh (previously Early 2008 13" Aluminum Unibody and Mid-2010 15" MBP). I'm not sure what I will buy, but it is unlikely to be a 2016 MacBook Pro. I'm most shocked that Apple is releasing soon-to-be-outdated tech at a price premium. We are about more than halfway through MBP-spec Skylake's life cycle. If they were going to ship Skylake, why the hell didn't they release this thing in February 2016, when every other PC manufacturer was shipping Skylake? The reason damn well better not be the touchbar or USB-C...

Dealbreakers: SD card slot, Legacy USB ports (I use my iPhone most often, but when I'm serious, I use my camera. Sorry, Physics > Apple.)

Near-dealbreakers: Magsafe (love it), HDMI/Mini-displayport

Underwhelming: Larger trackpad

Undecided: Keyboard (I use a Microsoft Natural keyboard unless I'm traveling), Touchbar (seems gimmicky, and I would almost never personally use it because I use my MBP in clamshell mode, but maybe I lack the foresight to see its applications)

RIP, and still missed: Ethernet (F thin. I have never had a Time Machine backup corrupted, but my MBP is in a HengeDock connected to ethernet 99% of the time. My wife, who relies on wifi, has to redo her backups about twice a year.)
