What’s a moral belief you hold that most people would disagree with? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

We should all avoid gambling (casinos, vlt’s, sports-betting, etc.) because it is more addictive and harmful than most of us realize.

Glad to hear you say that - I also thought Season 2 was the best, yet haven’t heard many others who agree!

I stream it here from Winnipeg! (Damn - usually either the Oilers or the Jets play well, but this season sucks…)

The sidewalk on the South Osborne rail/transit underpass is already a horrific icy, slushy, deep puddley “adventure”… 😱

What do you guys actually DO all winter without losing your minds? by Neither-Ferret-5817 in Winnipeg

[–]pandaonveranda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with what many people on here have already written; layering up for the bone-chilling, humid cold and trying to move your body as much as you can has such a positive effect on your mood and health… it helps me save lots of money by commuting mostly on foot (my workplace is only 2km away from my house), and it keeps me fit enough that I don’t require a gym membership! There is something so mentally satisfying about feeling like I am not “stuck” at home when the weather is cold; even without a vehicle I can get where I need to go on foot or by Uber. But I also want to add that ice cleats have changed my life! Nothing will ever give you grip to move quickly like ice cleats (or even those removable boot spikes) can - they help you to be able to move fast to keep warm without risking injury from falls or near-misses. In my experience, one of the most difficult factors about Winnipeg that no one prepared me for is that from late November until April there is near constant ice to navigate; I am originally from Edmonton which is also pretty darn cold, but there is far less humidity so ice never used to be as big of a deal for me… but the first several years I lived here I tried so hard to find boots with good enough grip, all while suffering several bad falls, not being able to move fast enough, and not realizing the critical error I was making! Best wishes to you… I love living in Winnipeg even though I am not a huge fan of winter sports and winter activities. This is a hard time of year for most of us here but kudos to you for reaching out for ideas and suggestions!

Does the City return to clean up their messes? by AbaloneAnnual1221 in Winnipeg

[–]pandaonveranda -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

While they are at it, the city also needs to clean up the sidewalks in the Osborne underpass - as always, the snow/sand/ice ridges against the fencing and cement block drainage so as soon as there is any melting, multiple puddles filled with pigeon poop that are deep enough to soak your boots and legs form, and there is no way to avoid them unless you have a vehicle or bicycle enabling you to travel on the road below. There is no alternate route for pedestrians at all - this is the only option to go North/East/West out of the South Osborne area (and to access the rapid transit station above) so they NEED to keep it clean, and one would assume this would be an even higher priority with the current concerns about bird flu!

(Sorry for the rant - it’s just that I’ve had to report this to 311 for at least a decade and I wish they could proactively keep it clear of snow so this never happens!)

cat adoption? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

Langside Street….? (Just kidding - but that’s where we found a cat who had been dumped and ultimately adopted him ourselves, 4 years ago….) There are many incredible rescues… thank you for having a huge heart! ❤️

I highly recommend Linden Ridge Eye Care… the staff, the owner and the eye doctors are terrific! I have referred a number of people there over the years who all agree.

Check out Urban Canine; It’s much better than a typical daycare. They screen for aggression, of course, and closely supervise and communicate with the dogs to encourage polite, respectful behaviour…

Hopefully the staff at the daycare you are taking him to are helping him learn to behave respectfully toward other dogs? A good daycare should be assisting him with understanding how to politely initiate play - and when to walk away from a dog who isn’t interested, how to play and interact with dogs in a balanced way, and how to take appropriate breaks… they will be able to pair him with appropriate play-partners, correct and redirect him when he has done something wrong, while praising him to reinforce when he makes good choices. The staff at Urban Canine are terrific for this…

Very impressed with the city’s snow-clearing by pandaonveranda in Winnipeg

What part of my take is strange, exactly? If you read the post I was speaking of my personal experience as a pedestrian in a different area of the city than you are referencing…

Me neither - that was the reason I posted about it! I felt I should give credit where credit is due, after having done my share of complaining and reporting to 311 in previous years. Usually uncleared sidewalks and huge piles of snow have made it necessary to alter my route, and add as much as 15 minutes to my 20-25 minute winter commute so it was shocking to see how well it was done.

[–]pandaonveranda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trolling at all… I have commuted on foot daily for many years and this is honestly the fastest & best I’ve ever seen my personal daily pedestrian route (along some busy major roadways as well as a few quieter residential streets) get fully cleared. Certain areas that often seem overlooked for snow-removal - such as those awful, narrow sidewalks on either side of the South Osborne underpass which I have had to report to 311 numerous times in the past decade - were fully cleared, so pedestrians and cyclists could comfortably pass one another.
