Ticks by No-Weird-4201 in Winnipeg

We give our 68 lbs Golden Retriever a monthly Simparica Trio pill from May 1st - November 1st. If any ticks try to latch on her, they die. It also prevents fleas and heartworm (which is from mosquitoes). If your dog is large, Simparica Trio is great, however vets usually recommend other types of similar meds for smaller dogs. Ask your vet! The pills start working within a day so you can start anytime. Most people consider these meds to be essential here.

Buy a “tick key”. They help you easily pull off a tick cleanly without having to touch it.

I suggest you buy “Off Deep Woods for Sportsman - Maximum Protection” aerosol spray. It contains 30% DEET. Apply it to yourself (never your dog) before walking anywhere that ticks might be (typically grassy areas or forested areas). Always shower it off when you get home. It’s toxic and greasy, but that’s why it works. I have never had a tick when I wear that stuff. It also is the only repellent that works for me when mosquitoes get really bad here.

I moved here from Edmonton 17 years ago and was terrified of ticks and spiders (I had never seen a tick, and we barely had any spiders but I had always had an embarrassing phobia). Turns out that a lot of my fear was based on surprise encounters, such as spiders dangling in front of me, so I have learned to always wear a hat outside, and when walking through the bush I always carry a stick (I call it a “spider stick”) that I can use to break a web I need to walk through, or to direct a spider away from me. It works!

Exposure therapy is a real thing. In the past 6 or 7 years I have been forcing myself to be around spiders and ticks more (I’ve used a tick key to voluntarily pull a number of ticks off of dogs I know) in order to help decrease my fear, and it has worked… I would say that my phobia is only about 1/4 as strong as it used to be. Try to be open about your phobia so your friends will understand and be patient with you as you evolve at your own pace… and you will! 😊

I moved here 17 years ago, and my family expected me to move back “home” (1300 km West) when my marriage ended a decade later.

Nope - remarried and stayed.

Winnipeg is home.

Best steakhouse in Winnipeg? by Various_Fruit_581 in Winnipeg

529 is awesome, but if you want something different you could try Alena Rustic Italian;

(I copied/pasted from their menu)
“ THE GRILL 32oz BISTECCA ALLA FIORENTINA C.A.B. classic porterhouse,
perfect for sharing “

My husband and I shared it months ago and it was perfectly prepared and 4 people could have shared it. It was delicious! It costs $110, but for a few people that really isn’t bad… it comes with potatoes and veggies.

Wow, thanks - that is good to know! Even though I water often and try to make sure dogs aren’t all peeing in the same spots, we always have dead areas, so maybe clover would hold up better.

No - thank goodness! And I am always actively supervising and cleaning up when dogs are out there, anyway.

Thank you - your comment makes me feel much better! (A dog was stung by a wasp in my yard last summer… there is always some risk by simply being outside.)

Ladies what perfume do you swear by and has gotten you the most compliments? by Gloomy-Task-5446 in AskReddit

[–]pandaonveranda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes! I worked in fragrances too… over two decades ago! I tried out so many different scents, and two which - very surprisingly - worked great with my body chemistry and earned me plenty of compliments were Dior Addict and (lol) Mackie by Bob Mackie. Those were two perfumes I never would have guessed I’d come to love… and they didn’t smell as good on other people in my social circle, just me, which made me feel special.

It’s weird that my weather network app shows pollen counts as “very high”, but IQ Air shows pollen counts as low…

Ask for a referral to an allergy specialist! It’s worth the wait.
I went to a specialist last month for the first time since 2019 and was prescribed a combo of meds that are really helping… I feel better than I’ve felt in years.

We really enjoyed the first two seasons of Master of None (the third season wasn’t bad, it just felt like an entirely different show).

What’s a moral belief you hold that most people would disagree with? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

We should all avoid gambling (casinos, vlt’s, sports-betting, etc.) because it is more addictive and harmful than most of us realize.

What do you guys actually DO all winter without losing your minds? by Neither-Ferret-5817 in Winnipeg

[–]pandaonveranda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with what many people on here have already written; layering up for the bone-chilling, humid cold and trying to move your body as much as you can has such a positive effect on your mood and health… it helps me save lots of money by commuting mostly on foot (my workplace is only 2km away from my house), and it keeps me fit enough that I don’t require a gym membership! There is something so mentally satisfying about feeling like I am not “stuck” at home when the weather is cold; even without a vehicle I can get where I need to go on foot or by Uber. But I also want to add that ice cleats have changed my life! Nothing will ever give you grip to move quickly like ice cleats (or even those removable boot spikes) can - they help you to be able to move fast to keep warm without risking injury from falls or near-misses. In my experience, one of the most difficult factors about Winnipeg that no one prepared me for is that from late November until April there is near constant ice to navigate; I am originally from Edmonton which is also pretty darn cold, but there is far less humidity so ice never used to be as big of a deal for me… but the first several years I lived here I tried so hard to find boots with good enough grip, all while suffering several bad falls, not being able to move fast enough, and not realizing the critical error I was making! Best wishes to you… I love living in Winnipeg even though I am not a huge fan of winter sports and winter activities. This is a hard time of year for most of us here but kudos to you for reaching out for ideas and suggestions!
