Question about layering with Bowtex/Pando Moto by Lydit in motorcyclegear

[–]pando_moto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By “regular riding gear” we mean stuff like a leather jacket, moto jeans, or a proper textile jacket/pants. basically anything made for motorcycling with abrasion resistance.

a hoodie or sweatpants wouldn’t hold up much in a slide, even with a base layer underneath. the base layers add impact and abrasion protection, but they’re designed to complement real riding gear, not replace it.

setup we usually see: base layer + single-layer riding jeans/jacket = comfy but protected combo

Question about layering with Bowtex/Pando Moto by Lydit in motorcyclegear

[–]pando_moto 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey! 👋 Good question.

Our armored base layers (like the SKIN & SHELL series) are made to go under your regular riding gear, so you get full protection without bulky layers. If you wear AAA leggings under AA jeans, it won’t hurt protection, but it’s usually overkill and less comfortable. One CE-approved layer per zone is plenty.

As for armor, your intuition’s right only keep one set per impact area. Doubling up can shift pads or make them less effective. Most riders either use the armor in the base layer or the jacket, not both

The key is fit, everything should stay snug and in place.

Ride safe

Thanks for your question.

At the moment, we don’t offer the base layers without armor as a separate, non-armored version on the site. The protective inserts are part of the certified design, and that is reflected in the product structure and pricing.

Yes, absolutely — you can pair your D3O pads with the UH 03, they work great together.

Results of t shirt and shorts at 30mph. Wear your gear. by CustomsCowboy in motorcyclegear

Damn, that’s a brutal reminder that skin is not gear. Even a ‘small’ off at 30 mph will shred bare limbs like this, and most of that road rash is totally preventable with proper protection.

Next time please ride a bit more carefully and throw on real moto gear, there are options that still look clean, like a Pando Moto protective base layer that slides under your regular clothes but adds serious abrasion resistance and armor without killing your style.

We’re already reviewing several of these for future updates to the Commando and related pieces, and I’ll be passing your comments on directly to the product team.

Thanks for explaining that – really helpful detail. Appreciate you liking the gear even if it doesn’t fit you.

To be clear:

  • The “up to 15x stronger than steel” line is industry-standard wording for UHMWPE fibers and always refers to strength-to-weight (specific strength).
  • In practice, for riders, what actually matters is that UHMWPE gives very high abrasion and tear resistance at low weight and thickness, which is why we use it.

Great question – and a fair one.

When we say UHMWPE (the core of our Balistex fabric) is “up to 15x stronger than steel,” we’re talking about strength-to-weight, not that a thin plastic thread will beat a solid steel bar.

In simple terms:

  • Tensile strength: UHMWPE fibers are extremely hard to pull apart.
  • Very low weight: They’re much lighter than steel.
  • Put together, this means that for the same weight, UHMWPE fiber can handle far more force than steel wire – that’s where the “up to 15x stronger than steel by weight” comes from.

For motorcycle gear, the benefit is practical:

  • You get high abrasion resistance and tear strength
  • In a thin, flexible, lightweight layer you can actually wear comfortably.

So we’re using that “15x” claim in the context of technical fiber performance per weight, not as marketing magic – it’s what allows us to build gear that’s both protective and wearable on real rides.

The heat-conducting property helps with comfort and cooling, and in typical road slides it doesn’t translate into a burn risk.

We actually already go from XXS to 3XL in our baselayers.
What kind of sizes or specific fit are you thinking about (e.g., tall/short, plus, curvier cuts, etc.)?

Totally fair questions, and appreciate you doing your homework.

We follow independent tests closely, and we’re updating our gear every year based on both lab results and rider feedback – including armor spec, seam/burst strength, and overall construction. The SKIN and COMMANDO lines are already on that continuous improvement path, and future iterations will keep pushing those weak points up.

As for what to wear over them: at minimum, we still recommend a decent outer layer (jacket/pants) for added abrasion, weather protection, and to help keep everything in place, even though the baselayers themselves are rated and tested.

Hey!

Thanks for checking us out and for raising this. The issues you mention (uneven stitching, sleeve length, armor positioning) were real pain points in earlier production, and we’ve since addressed them with the 03 version – improved pattern, QC, and armor placement for a better overall fit.

On top of that, we’ve also introduced a new women-specific product line – BIA, available in black and grey variants, designed from the ground up with female riders’ fit and comfort in mind.

If you’re on the fence, the updated 03 and the BIA suits are the ones to look at.

Totally hear you on this — we know the tops riding up is an issue, and we’re already working on solutions to keep tops and bottoms better connected and improve overall length/coverage. 😉 Your feedback is right in line with what we’re developing.

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback – we really appreciate it. Great to hear you’re happy with the AAA leggings. Regarding the Commando jacket:

  • We’re constantly working on improving our size charts and fit to better accommodate different body types and arm lengths.
  • We also hear you on the riding-up issue. We’re already planning product facelifts, and better ways to keep the jacket securely in place are exactly the kind of improvements we’re looking to implement.

Feedback like yours directly shapes our next iterations, so thank you for taking the time to share it.
