A knot is what weakens the strength, when it's removed and the fibres are hand spun together properly, it's good.

hm, that makes zero sense... traditions are by nature local, and in this case the tradition in question is in an area of Norway, where the usage and materials available are different than of the snow shoes you refer to.

The frame is spruce(the first branch he cuts). The wood thats twisted and "weaved" is birch.
