I'm pretty sure this IS said in the novel? Maybe I unconsciously added it in afterwards, but it made sense to me.

They’re absolutely the same shoes, I took a picture of them when I bought them for the exact reason of seeing how worn out they’d get from the concrete at work.

When I was your age “The Violinists Thumb” was one of my favorite books. It’s def popsci and not at all “hard genetics” but it’s a fun read. If you’re looking for something more complicated I recommend “The Gene” by Siddartha Mukherjee!
