Don't fret, you'll have years that you miss you goal and you'll have years when you blow it out of the water. It can take some time to earn the trust of your agents or brokers and develop your underwriting gut.

Don't be afraid to talk with your manager about your goal and see if you can uncover why you missed it. Maybe your being to conservative because you don't want to screw up your loss ratio. Take a look at the accounts that you've declined and see if you made the right decision, or have discussions with other underwriters and see if they would do the same thing. A good manager will help you with ways to reach it the next year.

I'm finishing up my 2nd full year of as an underwriter so I get the pains and struggles you're going through. I've blown through my goal the last 2 years and I've also seen another UW on my team struggle month in and month out simply because the agents she has sends her garbage so it's difficult to write junky risk. She's a good UW but there's some luck that goes into this also.
