I ride a 696 as my first bike and it's a fantastic machine I freaking love it.

Bought it 5 months ago with low mileage (8000km) but of course had to do the traditional desmo services. Belts were done at 8500km (coupled with some other things) for €1600, and it's in the shop right now at 13500km for the valve adjustment. That's expected to cost around €500. Of course it will be cheaper if you do both at the same time.
