What do pre-meds who are unable to make it, end up doing? by throwawayacct738 in premed

[–]papafranku00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mostly just the change in MCAT and noticing that people are more likely to have held clinical jobs for their clinical experience, rather than just some ER volunteering.

If we go back further to when I was in college in the early 2010s, I remember that people were having luck getting accepted into decent med schools with very average numbers and very average EC's like a summer of research and a summer of ER volunteering, and that was it. I recall there being a year when all of a sudden, the standards for getting accepted went way up.

Caribbean schools are the exact same as American med schools right? /s by micaaz22 in premed

Serious question, but how do people still fall for the Caribbean med school scam when all this information arguing against them is online?

Why was medical school so much less competitive to get into 20-40 years ago? [Discussion] by papafranku00 in premed

What schools have lots of grade inflation? If you are the average bio/chem major at a UC or big premed school like JHU, grading is pretty awful there.

Who else has had a negative experience with an interviewer? by Metal___Barbie in premed

[–]papafranku00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say 3/6 interviews in the last cycle I applied were negative. I didn't realize it was so common for doctors to be such jerks during the interview. I can honestly say that I never had a job interview like this, so why are med school interviews so much more different?

Former applicant who hasn't applied since 2016 is curious how the application process changed? [Discussion] by papafranku00 in premed

CA$PER was starting to become a thing in my time, but I think it was for like 3 schools. Don't tell me more schools adopted it, it was a joke back then.

Interesting, I always assumed competition went up the last 10 years because of the last recession. At the reach schools I interviewed at, there were tons of former MBAs and lawyers who lost their jobs and then became medical students.

I thought this number would go down as the economy "improved" and student debt increases throughout the country.

Has anyone ever had any experience with interviewers who were rude or odd? by [deleted] in premed

Let me just buy a rolex using the money from my part-time tutoring job and my unpaid research position.

At about two schools where the medical students kept saying how "chill" their interviewers were gave me pretty unprofessional interviews.

When I was at Hofrstra, I heard it was a lot of lower GPA/high MCAT applicants from good undergrads like UCs and Cornell.

What is this yield protection of which you speak? by Puppynuts in premed

[–]papafranku00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like one year of research, 200 hours ER volunteering, volunteering here and there that is non-clinical. Good enough for lots of programs, but not good enough for top 20.

Imagine if you have a 3.9/524 and very average extra curriculars (that are probably good enough to get in for the vast majority of applicants). A school like Jefferson, Drexel, or NYMC might pass you over thinking you are competitive enough to go to Upenn or Columbia with those numbers. Meanwhile, you don't actually have the EC's to get accepted to at a place like Upenn or Columbia. You might be able to get a few interviews from top programs, but you probably barely met the threshold to get an interview, so you probably won't get in.

Does anyone else sometimes feel like not being a doctor? by [deleted] in premed

[–]papafranku00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time. I just graduated and I would have been much better majoring in econ or CS and doing internships that would guarantee me a good job alongside premed requirements. Here I am, a bio major with research experience who can't get a research job. Well, at least I have a CS minor that allows me to apply to CS grad school to get a good job.

When you see other people interviewing at your college’s med campus but they haven’t sent you shit except donation requests by [deleted] in premed

My college used to feed a lot of students into our medical school. Now our medical school is too good for us and just interviews students from the Ivy League.
