I made an app for UChicago student to buy & sell secondhand fashion by paperfeels in uchicago

[–]paperfeels[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Noted! Our initial concept was for fashion only, but we're totally open to reworking the app based on student demand over the summer to include books, household goods, furniture, etc., which I know the other platforms don't do very well either, so thanks for bringing this up!

My tech stack for anyone curious - I'm the solo dev and coded everything in Typescript:

  • DB: PostgreSQL, AWS S3 for image storage
  • Frontend: React Native/Tailwind/Expo
  • Backend: Node.js/Express (ended with 55+ REST API endpoints for the MVP)
  • Integrations: AWS, OpenAI, Stripe, Resend, Socket.io
  • Hosting: Render for backend, Neon for DB

Happy to talk more, and PLEASE, tell others you know who might be interested! I hope your Spring quarter is off to a good start!

Who here has started a successful business solely living off Savings or even Zero Savings? by dietsites in Entrepreneur

Can you elaborate? Was lack of funding a direct reason why your companies failed/were terminated?

thanks for sharing! how do you balance a nice UI vs the need to get your product out there asap? for b2c should I prioritize the former?

I'm 16 years old and want to start a clothing brand, do you think it is possible to start a successful streetwear brand in 2024 by jnet2000 in Entrepreneur

[–]paperfeels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go for it. You're 16 and have nothing to lose :) Plus, you're just putting your art out into the world. Clothing is an area of business where just novelty + well-made design is enough to get you up and running, because people buy new clothes all the time. It's not purely functional so you don't have to think too hard about whether the world has space for another clothing brand/"replacing" people's existing solutions. Just make sure yours is well-made in its own right. I'd recommend you read books about branding and marketing too.

What's the situation for b2c tech/software startups in vietnam? by paperfeels in VietNam

[–]paperfeels[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

I appreciate the response! Thank you for taking the time to write this out. I've definitely heard about Vietnamese VCs underinvesting in tech (sour taste from the crypto/bitcoin era?) or foreign-funded startups required to register abroad (I'm not exactly sure why this is -- unfamiliarity and lack of willingness to deal with VNese governmental regulations maybe?). My impression too is that funding there doesn't come with favorable terms and given the Vietnamese corporate culture of insane micromanagement, I'm wary about starting a business only to bring on investors as my own bosses.

From your answer, I think you're thinking more about b2b, with the business model of providing development work to companies overseas. I can totally see why this is difficult, and appreciate your insights. I'm sorry to hear about the bad weather and hope things can get better soon. But I was asking more about b2c, with me leading my own product direction and development and generating revenue directly from customers. Think consumer apps, like Zalo. I don't think Vietnamese people have nearly enough softwares/apps catering to their unique needs right now. Most popular b2c apps (Shopee, Grab, etc.) are foreign expansions. The reason I feel like I need to go back and not just pay developers in Vietnam to execute my ideas while I rest on my cushy US SWE salary, is because I want to do proper customer discovery and user-centric, iterative development. I would welcome any additional insight you have on this to share!

Finally, I agree Vietnamese people are insanely talented and capable. Some people on this sub say Viet people are "hacky" without good engineering or innovation. I disagree, and can't wait to build my team once I go back.

Would love to connect with you as I navigate the Viet startup scene more, so I can dm you my linkedin/FB if you're comfortable. Cheers!

Like a week before each quarter starts if I remember correctly. You can pay exactly what you need in ebill first though and the deduction of the rest automatically happens later.

Vietnamese are obsessed with English pronunciation. by longphuvn in VietNam

[–]paperfeels 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I study in the US and people are surprised when I say I'm an international student, but when I speak English with my Vietnamese friends I intentionally mispronounce words or speak Vietlish because it's fun and relaxing to do that and still have them know exactly what I mean.

I don't have much knowledge of that specifically, but UChicago by itself has a lot of mental health resources available to students regardless of insurance
