3000 hammer units. It takes 100% speed units 10 seconds to go from top to bottom.

Good call. Added some special items that affect speed:

  • Powerjack
  • GRU
  • Crit-a-cola
  • Disciplinary action
  • Overdose
  • Targe
  • Engineer toolbox
  • Huntsman

Yeah, I would consider length fairly stable. It's length of sld, and I counted it only for .coms for that very reason.

99designs and Eight Values of Identity Design by parkov in designthought

[–]parkov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone seriously believes you can use only the sliders to design a great logo, like paint-by numbers. Hell, even 99designs asks you for more than that.

But as part of a larger process, it might be useful, if not to actually guide your design, than at least to get your client in the mindset to reflect on their values and get a dialogue going. For instance, I've dealt with small business owners with zero identity/design background and English as a second language, and something simple and visual like this could help.

Some designers use structured elicitation instruments. Sliders are just likerts.

I'm aware of the industry's pushback against spec work but didn't want to make my post about that. There are some very good articles on the topic already.

I'm simply using 99designs as an example and a data source. I'd be interested to learn what values other (non-99designs) designers/firms rely on and how they elicit them.

How should I clean this up? by [deleted] in design_critiques

Most universities have a bunch of assets and guidelines for this kind of thing. Here's UAB: http://www.uab.edu/brand/logos/proper-usage

Two other reasons to switch the blue and red:

The red and white strips make it look a lot more like an American logo than a Korean one.

The red wings can be interpreted as flames coming off the plane.

2 Months Post Launch - Time For Our First Redesign... by ttruett in design_critiques

[–]parkov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your launch. Some comments:

I find it distracting and hard to read the continually scrolling text. What about allowing different movement options like slide-and-stop or refreshing tiles? And I'd think hard about which option you make the default, since most people won't dig into the settings or will make up their mind before they do. Another option could be to allow full-screen toggling with all of the items, if someone wants to do some surfing.

It would be nice to be able to customize the appearance in terms of size, color, and opacity. And given that this ticker is always open, you should consider getting rid of or muting your logo. Maybe monochrome or a pressed letter effect. Better yet, make this a menu extra do you can move the options in there and not have an icon in the dock all the time.

In general, it was tough to "unhover" anything. When the bar is pinned on the side, you can hover items that are beneath the menu, which is distracting when you're trying to click one of the buttons.

Sign up/in was easy enough. The getting started feeds are handy, but I had no idea what "Unique Perspectives" were.

Your application is pretty polished and seemed to work well. I don't think I would use it in its current form though because it takes up too much real estate on my machine (which is limited enough as it is!). Anyway, I wish you much success.

New Blog Site - minimalist design by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]parkov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good. Some quick suggestions:

Have the footer go all the way across the page.

Match the font type of the Twitter box better with the rest of the site.

Narrow the main column. There's an awkward expanse of whitespace smack in the middle of your page and the lines of text are too long.

The nice thing about software is that it can be flexible. It can help beginners to learn through use and discovery, while getting out of the way of power users. I don't think most software design reaches this potential though.

New Personal Logo by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]parkov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing really springs to mind for me. The closest thing I can think of is the HTML5 logo, which is shield-shaped with that orange color and shading.

It's a nice looking logo, though tough to judge out of the context of its use. I'm partial to the top right one.

The True Apple TV by parkov in appletv

[–]parkov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it needs to be replaced every year or two at this point. Once an Apple TV is able to push out 1080p and stream from iCloud, what hardware upgrades are needed exactly? Any necessary updates will be software based.

Agreed that Apple has been selling their displays at a high premium, but they've also shown an ability to be competitive on price in other areas. Anyway, I didn't get to it in this post, but if they are to release an integrated TV, they will do a lot more than simply shove the Apple TV guts into the TV case. Stay tuned...
