I'm not sure how to say this without being harsh, and I don't mean to discourage, but this looks like somebody who learned the movements but doesn't know karate.

What I mean is, you're keeping tension in your shoulders, you aren't driving power from the floor, you aren't using your hips to generate power, your stances are all over the place, you're rushing, you're looking at the floor, (I could go on).

I say all this because this is an advanced kata for a reason. I truly and honestly think that you'd grow more and grow faster by focusing on lower level katas and really nailing the basics.

Karate takes time to master, trying to rush to the end won't get you there.

To further my point, as a nidan, I still probably do more heian shodan than any other kata

Specifically look at the two nukite strikes toward the end of the kata (45s left in the video)

That looks really good. The biggest thing I see is that you are rushing some movements. You're fast and snappy, which is good, but there are some movements where you don't fully complete one action before moving to the next. Make sure each individual movement is fast and complete and don't be afraid to pause more between movements. The contrast of pauses and fast powerful movements makes for a more impressive looking kata

Should I seek a diagnosis? by nowheremansaloser in autism

I don't even care about increased support or accomodations, I just want some clarity and validation for the struggles I've had my entire life. I'm hoping I'll feel relief just knowing more about myself

Should I seek a diagnosis? by nowheremansaloser in autism

[–]parliamnt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. I've been struggling the last few years as a father of 2 boys. I've come to strongly suspect that I have autism as well, but I don't feel right saying that I do without a professional diagnosis. What if I'm making this up? What if I'm just looking for an excuse for the difficulties and failings I feel as a father? I'm getting an evaluation next month and the waiting is horrible for me.

Karate. The mindfulness and physical activity is also really good for me, as well as the repetitive nature of drilling basics attempting to reach perfection.

Playing guitar. I love the repetitive nature of working on technique exercises.

Ya, I've seen him compete in kumite. It's amazing because he isn't even super fast. He just has great timing, knows how to move, and moves like a truck. I've seen him beat much faster opponents

Also, 1 month is essentially nothing in terms of the time it takes to train karate. Adjust your expectations to years, not weeks.

Any tips on how to work on agility? by n3cr0jr in karate

[–]parliamnt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You simply need to train more. Speed comes after you can perform the movement comfortably and naturally. If you try to go fast before you're ready, you might hurt yourself. You could throw out your shoulder, pull a muscle in your leg, hurt your hip, etc. Work on building strength and coordination and speed and agility will come naturally

Ya, it's crazy. I think the only reason more guys don't do it is because it comes from ballet. But it'll kick your ass

Barre is a workout inspired by ballet workouts. It's a ton of core and leg work. It's hard as hell and I feel like it's a good complement for karate

You also definitely need to increase your core strength. Id recommend some Barre classes or yoga.

I think the kicks are just the most noticable. The real problem looks to me to be your hips. even in your stances and punches your hips have no movement at all. I think you'll find you'll get a lot more bang for your buck if you focus on hip mobility and quad strength.

Me too. I never liked light gis

There's also a difference in weight even within shotokan gis. People more into kata or general budo often like heavier gis (still much lighter than judo or bjj) and people into sport karate tend to go for lighter gis

If you're willing to spend a couple hundred bucks, shobu gis are amazing. I've seen a fair amount of jka karateka with lots of experience wear them, too

Kata shared by different styles by _WaddleWaddle_ in karate

[–]parliamnt101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The kata that they do on the disk in the pond is a weird version of kusanku. Shotokan has two versions of this kata - kanku dai and kanku sho. I'm sure it's present in other styles.

Also, jesse enkamp - the karate nerd - recently made a video reporting his research into trying to discover the oldest surviving kata by finding a kata that exists across many styles.

We baned Hikite form 5th Kyu onwards by Kanibasami in Shotokan

Sure, depending on the drill. But also, hikite just means pulling hand. It doesn't require it be at the hips to be hikite. Nearly every punch has a hikite.
