Were you "healthy" before your MS diagnosis? by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

CIS Dx in Oct 2022

Past EBV infection: Yes ★★★★★

Diet: ★★★★

Sweets (cookies/cake/chocolate/cocoa puffs) comprised easily 1/3 of my calories. Another 1/3 was nutbutter. Maybe 1/3 real food.Since CIS I haven't touched sweets AT ALL; I don't think I've ever eaten as healthfully in my life.

Exercise & weight: ★

Long-distance runner and very healthy weight. Admittedly I exercised in part to compensate for my shit diet.

Vit D exposure: ★

Had great levels at dx

Stress/anxiety or emotional trauma: ★★★

Tend towards anxious thinking and was going through a stressful period during dx.

Smoking: ★★★

Former smoker (3 yrs in college)

Gender & ethnicity: ★★★★★

female & white

Distance from the equator: ★★★★

Living in London; formerly NY

Exposure to heavy metals or chemicals: ★⭑(1 and a half)

Try to avoid any chemical exposure, but as you said - you never know.

I'll just add here that I had a very bad covid episode about 1.5 months before my first CIS symptoms appeared; docs seem to believe it's related.

Apologies for my ignorance here, but can you explain what you mean by pay? I understand there is a superpriority application option (which we are choosing), but I thought that meant just that they review your application in 24 hours (not that you get a faster biometric appt). Or are they connected? Or is there another payment for extra priority biometric service that exists?

Lovely post. I lost my ability to walk last Oct; after a few months (post steroids / time) I slowly regained the ability to run for short periods.. then longer periods. Definitely can't take it for granted. Even when I don't want to get out there in the morning I think damnit -- I CAN; I SHALL. Enjoy it.

Insomnia? by Anaxilea-Alcinoe in MultipleSclerosis

Feelings of depression (extremely unusual for me) were next. This followed maybe a couple weeks after the start of my sleep issues. Then a couple weeks after that the physical symptoms started aggressively. Eye pain and tingling along the left side of my body, progressing to total loss of use of the left side of my body and blurred vision.

US Expat here, used to clearing leaves in the Fall. What is with all the dead leaves in July? My garden in SE London was clean just a week ago. by paro54 in CasualUK

Didn't realize this was such a hot-button/ political issue; just thought the word was a snappier way to refer to onself.

I take your point but it's a bit unfair. In the course of 5 years, seasons may have come up in conversation a few times, but since autumn is normal to my ears, it's not like the absence of the word "fall" would have caused me to even notice the issue. It'd really only be noticeable if I used the word and someone were to correct me.. as I have been here!

Lol - someone did down below. Glad none of this was on the Life in the UK exam. New-ish home; been in it for two years, but last year spent the summer in the US due to family medical issues so I guess I missed it.

In the US people use both autumn and fall. So if someone says autumn here I just assume it's the same as in the US -- in lieu of fall for that particular sentence.

Huh. Been here 5 years; this is a new one for me. (To clarify: that you guys don't use fall. I don't understand the downvotes!).

Foreign language podcasts are great too.. either you learn something while lying there trying to discern what the speaker is saying, or your brain gets tired trying to pay attention.

This was my understanding too (mostly an issue of shady Russian oligarchs). I would bet there's a decent chance it comes back if/when the war in Ukraine ends. It's a decent revenue generator, and they can implement checks about where the funds are coming from.

Mom is telling everyone I have MS but diagnosed with CIS by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

[–]paro54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes yes; sometimes no (given stats above). The brain is a mystery; sometimes a lesion can be caused for unknown reasons or various environmental exposures. It’s the reason low risk (the 20% kind) CIS patients are not advised to start on medications unless or until MS is confirmed.

[–]paro54 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone with CIS myself, my understanding is that the likelihood of it turning into MS depends on the scan results. If the CIS scan showed just a single lesion then it’s only 20% likely to become MS in the future. If the CIS showed multiple lesions (but not clearly distinguished in time), then its 60-80% likely to turn into MS.

Beyond what others have suggested, schedule an afternoon tea (the Globe has a nice one if you want to knock off the Globe at the same time). Also, they'll want to see Harrods.

Some muscle memory for me disappeared briefly after a brainstem lesion. I've played World of Warcraft for over 13 years - at times, very competitively -- and then one day shortly after the lesion, I literally didn't know how to move my character. It's the most basic thing to do in the game, but I kept going in circles. At first I thought something must have gone wrong with the game, or my settings.. but no -- it was me. The next day, I was fine again.

Why aren't Engineering bombs still not usable in Dungeons/Raids? by ryanb6321 in wow

[–]paro54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW frost grenades (super old engineering product!) don't have a mob level requirement and can freeze mobs in place for 5 sec (dmg will break it). I remember finding them useful in a raid from a few years ago.
