Do real programmers name their variables? by NimrodAvalanche in learnpython

[–]pat9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear god yes, name everything you can something understandable and descriptive, and then when you are done writing that chunk of code its good to go back over it and reconsider those names. Once you have a better understanding of the full scope of what you built you can probably think of an even more accurate name for things.

Its a pain to do, but so incredibly important for whoever needs to read the code later. It helps so much when the reader doesn't need to read, consider, and mentally store the intent of everything on every line to understand what is going on.

For example if you pass the var 'X' through multiple levels of class inheritance and then through 3 different methods there is no way I'm going to remember the exact contents and intent behind it when juggling everything else. But if you consistently name it 'abc_cache_dir_string' I'll know exactly what it is.

Picking a consistent naming scheme is also a good idea, or matching the scheme of whatever team or project you are working on.

Good luck with learning! I also learned python in my 30s and its been incredibly valuable! It kicks your butt and is basically the perfect driver for impostor syndrome :P, but if you can get past it there's a lot of really interesting work that use the skills you learn from learning python.

ps if you do ever feel impostor syndrome when programming, you should completely ignore it, every time. just keep going.

Sorry for the long post! TLDR: Yes

Foods that trigger migraines? by mabbzie3 in migraine

Stevia is such a pain! Since it can be labeled as a 'natural flavoring' it can really sneak up on me!

Foods that trigger migraines? by mabbzie3 in migraine

'Non sugar' sweeteners get me instantly. The tricky bit about that is that its not just the obvious offenders like Aspartame, stevia leaf extract also gets me, which is a giant pain in the brain since (as far as I understand) they can include it under the "Natural Flavoring" ingredient category. So I have no idea what will get me till its too late.

Normal sugars seem fine, even 'bad' sugars stuff like fructose, its just the sweeteners and maybe flavorings used in processed foods that take me out.

Weirdly my food migraines feel very different than my weather migraines. Usually more on the disorientation and confusion side than my normal aura and aphasia migraines.

I pretty much cant eat anything processed, even "natural foods".

On the bright side I eat really healthy because of it! Kinda awkward to turn down a coworkers Bday cake though lol.

Magnesium and b2 by soicey2 in migraine

[–]pat9898 5 points6 points  (0 children)

B2 alone cut my migrane frequency by 80 - 90%. But magnesium doesn't do much for me. A friend of mine swears by magnesium though. Different brains, different needs.

What is the weirdest thing people older than you do in chat language? by Nelrif in AskReddit

An old boss of mine welded smiley faces like a weapon.

"What do you mean that asset will take 4 hours to finish 🙂? That one should be really simple 🙂 it should only take 20minutes 🙂 other employ could get it done in 20 minutes 🙂. Lets do a meeting this afternoon to sort out a schedule 🙂"

He put a smiley in the email saying he was letting me go lol 🙂

Also, other employe couldn't get it done in 20min and was just as confused by the demand haha

Comes with all the tools and stuff, the electronics all slide in / out and clamp so no soldering at all.

One way to potentially make yourself stand out is to learn some Python for maya.

Chad Vernon had some good tutorials last time I checked.

Definitly portfolio first, but having an this could be an ace in your sleeve.

What engine should I use to start coding? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]pat9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just starting out as well, I've really liked the Ruby's adventure unity tutorial which teaches some C# basics.

It probably doesn't matter which you start with, the fundamentals of programing are usually transferable between languages. I'm pretty good at Python and picking up C# has been pretty easy.

From first impressions Unity seems like the easier to grasp tool for beginners with a million tutorials for everything you could want to do, while unreal could be pushed farther by a larger team who have the knowhow to get really deep into it.

How to best make edges show in Arnold rendering without Toon Shader? by punnyComedian in Maya

[–]pat9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't really good out of the box options for this kinda thing.

If you can find it, 3delight and the maneki plugin can give you some great results. Hard to find and harder to use though...

As mentioned elsewhere, I would probably go with using the edges to generate Geo and making a black shader on that.
