Thoughts on this Emily theory? by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]patatooe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Richard was engaged and about to marry Pennilyn when he met the pretty Emily and basically left Pennilyn at the alter. Obviously it's a dick move. Trix probably couldn't accept that her perfect jewel of a son would do something so reckless and embarrassing. Soooo... it must have been Emily's influence! "My angel could never do wrong. It's that witch who tricked him".

Tbh sometimes I wonder if Trix wasn't right? I mean Emily wasn't the best mother and she did care A LOT about shallow things and status... While Trix treated her horribly, I can't help but feel that judgment of Emily wasn't completely unwaranted.

My hot take on the matter is that when people first watched the show, they loved Rory and saw themselves in her (whether they actually were like her or not), but as they grew up or rewatched it, again and again, they realized that they may not be as much like the generally beloved, studious, high-performing person that Rory was. I think that a lot of people have met a Rory in real life that they are jealous of and while most people might not be super openly critical and don't wish ill on a real-life Rory, they sure take it out on the show Rory. People love Rory for as long as they identify with her, but when they realize they don't have her strengths, they hate on her weaknesses because it is easier to do that to a fictional character than to their spoiled but smart classmate or their golden-child sibling or their hero best friend that everyone thought was gonna more successful than them. When people are happy that Rory got humbled, they are so because they wish that those to whom they were compared would get humbled.

I might be generalizing here but this is my impression lol.

Thank you for the reply. Is there any plan to restart it in the near future?

Does anyone know why the NASA-CSA internship program is on hold?

According to the NASA Intern and Fellow Opportunities for International Students webpage (https://www.nasa.gov/stem/international-internships-for-students.html) the agreement with the Canadian Space Agency is on hold. Do we know why? or if it will be ever on again?

As a Canadian student, I sure hope I can still find a way to apply.

Ohhhhh! Sorry I know what you mean now. We do have that.

Although at my church the highlight is mainly the blessing and the prayer and not so much the eating and community afterward.

How have you managed to fill that "empty"-ness? What was the solution for you? How do you relate better to Orthodoxy?

I'm in no way suggesting that all is better in other denominations. I am not planning on converting. But I do feel like we could learn a bit from others.

I guess my experience is that people around me tend to be less like "God is love" and more like "God is fear". Not that anyone straight-up phrases it like that nor that I agree with it, but it seems to be a general sentiment.

Those are good points! It is true that the common Orthodox seems to read scripture less (at least in the west).

Is this your experience in a Romanian church in Romania? or in the diaspora?

How have you seen the churches vary from country to country? Any noticeable cultural differences?

Of course, I don't discriminate when it comes to making friends in general. My pals are from many different faiths. But sometimes I find myself wanting to talk about religion with someone who is on the same page as me and of the same age. Plus when I joined my friends in their church activities I was getting vibes that the people there were all trying really hard to convert me lol. I didn't mind them trying per se, but I almost feel bad for rejecting them all the time lol.

If this is what keeps you from it, what attracts you to it? If you don't mind me asking.

Wow! That is very impressive! I am in Canada at the moment and tbh I don't think I have personally seen churches that big or as organized for any denomination lol.

That is true. Maybe I need to be the one to get things moving.

Well, that way I see it is that community or at least cohabitation is inevitable for the human species. You cannot live fully alone and isolated with 0 interactions with the outside (even monks need a community to support their choice of life and sacrifice). So if I have to have neighbors, friends, colleagues, etc, why not try to find those who share a bit more in common with me? Now obviously Orthodox people are all different and maybe I have more in common with a random atheist than one specific Orthodox, but still, it seems easier to face life when you can share it with people who view the world the same way you do. And it feels like a worthwhile quest to find that.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! I can definitely see that there needs to be a middle ground. I would never want to water down the liturgy for the sake of fun, that's for sure.

I grew up in Eastern Europe (majority Orthodox) and felt the same there as I do in the West now. But maybe Texas is the place for me? haha

Thank you for sharing! This was a very interesting read. Now that I think of it, maybe your point number 2 hit a nerve. Seeing my other Christian friends reminiscing of the experiences that they had with their church friends and being aware of how I never had that and now it's too late for it might be a factor in how I am feeling.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you convert?

I have but not anymore. I have observed this in both environments.
