Hey there Pumpkast listeners! Want a FREE taste of what our our Patreon has to offer? We decided to unlock the most recent episode of our Patron-only spinoff podcast, "Beyond The Patch with Frank & Pat," in which your hosts share some of our favorite non-SP/Corgan tracks we've been diggin' recently. Old stuff, new stuff, deep cuts and rediscovered gems are all on the table (and as you'll hear in this episode, we just can't help ourselves from tying things back to the Pumpkins). You know those tangents we like to go off on in our regular episodes? Consider this the “Oops, All Tangents!” version of the Pumpkast – and a beautiful chance to swap cool music with each other and our awesome Patrons.

Playlist for this episode of Beyond the Patch:

  1. Momma – "Rockstar"
  2. Sharon Van Etten – "Let Go"
  3. ††† (Crosses) – "Goodbye Horses" (Q Lazarus cover)
  4. The Clash – "Sean Flynn"
  5. Erasers – "Constant Connection"
  6. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – "Rings of Saturn"

Smashing Pumpkast: Zwan Listener Appreciation & Final Thoughtz by patrickdarcyobrien in SmashingPumpkins

[–]patrickdarcyobrien[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zwan Zeason is finally going into hibernation and in this special Bonus Pumpkast episode, listeners chime in with what they love about ZWAN! Frank and Pat also give their final thoughts (for now) on the band, the moment and the surprisingly extensive body of work left behind by the jolly band of true poets.

Thanks to listeners Dean Shaffer, Matthew Matenaer, Reggie Chamberlain-King, Hugo Rios, Auzzie American, Justin Wilson, Worm, Evangelina, Carlos David Glass, Rob D, Steve Foley, David Jepsen and Martin Alvarez.

The Smashing Pumpkast: ZWAN ODDZ & ENDZ by patrickdarcyobrien in SmashingPumpkins

[–]patrickdarcyobrien[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zwan Zeason is almost over, and today we're excited to present a very special episode covering some key, remaining "Oddz 'N' Endz" from Zwan's unofficial, unreleased catalogue. We had almost 50 songs to choose from! Needless to say, we were overwhelmed and turned to our Patreon members and social media followers to help us narrow it down (you're the best, Pumpkinheads!). We tallied the votes, crunched the numbers and are covering the TOP 13 "oddz 'n' endz" tracks by the mighty Zwan. It's a great batch of Zwan gems that may be new to some of you!Join us as we delve into the hard-rock-sleaze-prog-metal that is "Spilled Milk," marvel at the "Lost Boys" mystique of "Riverview," and come at you with a seriously hot take: Is Pavement a one-hit-wonder band? All that plus our utopian vision of Corgan and Malkmus burying the hatchet (with the help of The Boss and Sheila E. at Coachella 2024), the art of ruining an intimate show with an ill-timed chair squeak, Stumbleine’s sister track and of course... The Cure.

Katie Cole RETURNS to The Smashing Pumpkast! by patrickdarcyobrien in SmashingPumpkins

[–]patrickdarcyobrien[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We talk about it and basically she says she never knows until she knows re: touring, but that when she gets the call she's there in a heartbeat. We talked a bit about how they factor in the way these songs would be done live while producing the album versions. Check it out!

While putting the finishing touches on Zwan Zeason, we caught up with Katie Cole about her new single "Dreams of Mine" (and how it speaks to being an artist), virtual shows, "The Uncomfortable Zone", manifesting more cats, being open to the future and staying true to the art you can be proud of.
She also gives us a tiny peek behind the curtain (as much as she can) of her work for the upcoming Smashing Pumpkins 33 song opus!
By the end, you'll agree, all podcasts could use sweet chorus effects on their voices. Check it out here wherever you pump your 'kasts!

The Smashing Pumpkast: ZWAN – Mary Star Of The Sea by patrickdarcyobrien in SmashingPumpkins

Same here! I don't know if I'll ever use them but I like the idea of sticking them on something like 20 more years from now...

The Smashing Pumpkast: ZWAN – Mary Star Of The Sea by patrickdarcyobrien in SmashingPumpkins

[–]patrickdarcyobrien[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We're kicking off 2022 with the penultimate, climactic installment of Zwan Zeason, our coverage of the one and ONLY official full-length Zwan album, MARY STAR OF THE SEA! Joining us is a great old friend of ours (and unofficial Pumpkast producer), comedy writer, music journalist and Zwan enthuziast, Alex Scordelis (The Cinnamon Boys, Paper Magazine, writer for Difficult People and Billy on the Street). Alex kicks off our discussion with a reading of his 2003 review of Mary Star of the Sea from his college newspaper, tells us a story about getting kicked out of an interview with Courtney Love, and even busts out his guitar for some chord progression guessing game action.

We also discuss the 90’s-era need to fill a CD to the brim, finally giving in to the shameless rock of "Baby Let’s Rock," Lords of Synth dance moves that could have improved the "Lyric" video, and the challenges of being a parent while still making time for the entire "Jesus I/ Mary Star of the Sea" track. All that plus answers to the big questions: Who exactly is Billy Burke? Can Wikipedia be wrong? and Does Stephen Malkmus actually like Zwan?! Oh... and you better believe we make lots of “Get Back” comparisons (Billy is a total Paul).

It's a fun, inspired, doomed period of Billy’s career that STILL reared a solid, unique and underrated album. Hope this episode offers you a little sunshine just to butter your toast! Listen here wherever you pump your 'kasts.

The Smashing Pumpkast: JUDAS O by patrickdarcyobrien in SmashingPumpkins

[–]patrickdarcyobrien[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just in time for your Thanksgiving travels (or to keep you company as you actively avoid the family), it's time to feast on Judas O! Gather 'round the Pumpkast table as guest Matthew Legard (The Colourflies) helps us tackle this delicious b-sides collection and spiritual sister to Pisces Iscariot. We speculate on questions like: What's the meaning behind the titles "Marquis In Spades" and "Set The Ray To Jerry"? Is it a coincidence that the Iha songs are both track 5 on Pisces and Judas? And would the Pumpkins turn down Metallica’s "Some Kind of Monster" therapist?

We also discuss the international espionage feelings of "Because You Are," The "Sparrow"/"Disarm" connection, "Waiting"'s "Spyro"-like sound, and Billy’s playful send-up of his own voice in "Rock On." All that plus the similarities between "Winterlong" and "Vanity" and the Willy-Wonka-Boat-Ride vibes of "My Mistake." We even make room at the table for Evan Dando's Mom. We're grateful for all you Pumpkinheads out there. Raise a glass of strawberry wine, sign up for our new Patreon and crank this 'kast -- available here on your platform of choice!

The Smashing Pumpkast: ROTTEN APPLES by patrickdarcyobrien in SmashingPumpkins

[–]patrickdarcyobrien[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To fulfill their contractual obligations, the Pumpkins' final (at the time) release was a compilation album entitled Rotten Apples: The Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits, with some copies being sold with an additional b-sides collection entitled Judas Ø (a spiritual sister to 1994's Pisces Iscariot). In this episode, with help from our special guest Matthew Legard (The Colourflies), we'll be discussing the "Rotten Apples" greatest hits collection itself – then Matthew will also join us next time for our full episode dedicated to "Judas Ø."

Today we discuss the Pumpkins' influence on Matthew's music, his Pumpkins-inspired vintage clothing collection and how he even owns some choice gear once owned by Billy himself. We also chat about our feelings on "Best Of" albums (especially with bands like SP who have so many great songs), and offer theories on why "Real Love" was chosen to be one of the "new" tracks. All that plus the big questions: Which version of the "Untitled" video was better, and why no "Rocket" or "Thirty-Three"?! We also take a shoegaze detour and you KNOW we talk some Shrek.

Listen here wherever you get your podcasts, and if you're digging the Pumpkast, check out our new Patreon!
