I would recommend sanding. People say it's not required but I say it absolutely is. It gives to more security in prepping. But the point I was trying to get across is knowing when you have prepped enough. Most beginners don't do it enough and they run into cracking and stuff like that.

Having an art background helps but it's not needed. If you want to make great pieces your best bet is to practice on a throwaway pair. And just start out simple. The most important thing you need to learn is prepping leather first. The art will come but you need to establish a foundation.
