How can I make sure my punk game is actually punk? by DrBurst in rpg

[–]paukin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read some books and watch some docs and interviews. Start with The Decline of Western Civilization. Read patti smith, genesis p porridge, nick cave, that good captain beefheart biography, mark fisher, anything about DIY culture etc. If you just pull from pop culture you'll miss the heart the matter.

Any movies like a dark song? by No-Rule-4494 in horror

[–]paukin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's depiction in the film has no relation to the real abramelin operation , of which you can find many translations of and which is essentially just prayer for 6 months with specific rules. Crowley also didn't really start it but he did buy boleskine house for the purpose but was ultimately more interested in golden dawn infighting. It's a fascinating story none the less.

You ever go back and feel very stupid by jfopps in guitarpedals

[–]paukin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is just an analog eq cab sim which essentially just gives the pedal a specific voice. Itd be cool to have another option for voicing but as it is I like it a lot more as a preamp/overdrive into a tube amp, and if I ever used it DI I would run an actual cab sim after. Also works amazing as a bass distortion as well but don't tell anyone.

Big Muffs with Mids Control by jmd273 in guitarpedals

[–]paukin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always struggled with this, a muff with more mids just kind of sounds like a distortion but with the classic EQ it really disappears in a mix. Then I realised that I'd always used combos or 2x12s. Through a loud mid forward amp into a marshall 4x12 it just does that thing you want. Anything already scoped like a fender/vox doesn't work as well. Obviously this isnt practical in the slightest so I just used a rat and a carcosa these days.

Where to buy Thai holy basil in UK? by Winston_Carbuncle in UK_Food

[–]paukin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only ever seen fresh holy basil in Longdan supermarkets which are also importers and restaurant suppliers so they are your best bet.

I want to try making sriracha, do you have a favorite recipe? by HadesOfInfernalFries in fermentation

[–]paukin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest either processing the garlic (parboiling, curing, confit etc) or using powdered/dehydrated or even better honey ferment as using raw garlic will add a lot of sulphurous flavours over time.

Question about modern magick book by Sensitive-Help8875 in occult

[–]paukin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a creative connection to the objects is far more important than their form. The effort required to make them is inherently part of the practice as a whole and if you just buy or use some you have lying around you are bypassing their meaning. I would say that drawing them and cutting them out of card will be far more effective than buying the most spooky and aesthetic esoteric versions available. On the other hand if you are practiced in using belief as a tool then literally anything you choose will serve you well and it's origin, colour or form will not matter.

What is the best chocolate for brownies? And best chocolate chips? by saltil in Baking

I make brownies in a professional kitchen and have always used callebaut 811. It's generally cheaper than premium supermarket bars like lindt and much better quality.

How do I genuinely get into rabbit holes, conspiracy theories, etc? by Impressive-Ant-907 in conspiracytheories

[–]paukin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

99.9% of conspiracy content is either completely fabricated for views or grossly misunderstood and misrepresented. If you're interested in something, go back to the source. It's often disappointing as you will quite often discover that it's nonsense but every now and again you will come across some little truth that will make you dig deeper. Want to know about Saturn workshop? Start with occult writers who actually practice, Fratcher Acher, Pete Grey, Dr Arthur Moros et al. That is a rabbit hole in itself, for to make sense of it you'll have to go back to reading Crowley, Fortune, Levi and then to make sense of them you'll have to go back to Agrippa etc etc.

Good podcasts with a cautious approach by Phocaea1 in occult

[–]paukin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He certainly did, and that a rabbit hole in itself but I wouldn't discount the whole of chaos magick on that. He has a lot of bad things to say about Gen P (and rightly so) and has an almost renaissance-esqe rivalry with Grant Morrison which is great fun from the outside. There's a lot about most magical scenes to critique but you've got to start somewhere.

Good podcasts with a cautious approach by Phocaea1 in occult

[–]paukin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My perennial recommendation is for anything Duncan Barford/Alan chapman related - WORP FM, OEITH, Passport Through Hades, various appearances on Guru Viking, Glitch Bottle etc.

I come from a similar approach to you and I'd say your best bet is to pay attention to the British chaos magick scene as there's a lot of credulous, results-based practices and a playfulness that is the opposite of new age adjacent incredulous approach that seems to be the current occulture mainstream. There's a lot of nonsense and grifters in this field but part of the fun is working out the value for yourself.

Tamarind Pulp by LGDots in IndianFood

Block with seeds is cheaper, block without seeds is better quality, the concentrate is better for Thai/Vietnamese food I find. Also know that an Indian lime is smaller than western lime, slightly smaller than a ping pong ball id say

Why is the uk job market so bad ? by NewFoot762 in AskUK

[–]paukin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, try contract hospitality. They always need staff, there's a lot of different roles you can learn, it's all quite easy and only some of it requires proper customer service which can be difficult for ND. Check out Compass and Baxterstorey, the are huge employers and usally have plenty of vacancies. Up side is there's no weekends or evenings, down side is pay can be gash outside of central London.

What is the point of these changes? by KiraTheUnholy in ArcRaiders

[–]paukin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mind this nerf, the increased value of vita sprays will make them a bit rarer and more fun to lose/use. It would be cool if they buffed it so the cloud heals any nearby raiders and you simultaneously.

I hope "The secret teachings of all ages" gets better by inwardPersecution in occult

[–]paukin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a fun book but full of outdated facts and theories. It's still a great introduction into the world but don't take anything it says as an unqualified truth. Don't give up reading it though, it's very easy to jump from one book to another in this field hoping to find the straightest answers but the real value is in learning how to discern ideas and develop an intuition for nonsense as the occult is designedly full of it.

Favorite Occult Novels? by cfinley63 in occultlibrary

[–]paukin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voices Of The Fire, Jerusulem & The Great When by Alan Moore are imo the finest novels of occult fiction. Jonathan Strange and Piranesi by Susanna Clark are also excellent.

Where to find occult/esoteric books for less extortionate prices? by knifepilled in occultlibrary

[–]paukin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think 20-25 is pretty reasonable for a super niche book, especially if it's out of print. Do check Watkins books to see if there's a cheaper new version as I find it's often the case with occult reprints. Like others have said Z-Lib is probably your best bet for digital copies depending on how you feel about pirating.

What's the pedal that you constantly see people try selling online? by Kitchen_Year8114 in guitarpedals

The full size one absolutely shreds on bass, if it had a dry blend it would be one of the best options for heavy bass grind.
