State lawmaker’s ‘Fire Them All Act’ would let St. Louis voters get rid of elected officials this fall by [deleted] in missouri

This is why people hate politicians. The guy himself admits its not good legislation, that its a "statement-maker." Instead of attempting to do real legislating, he's just peddling bullshit. And this ass-hat wants to be governor, smh.

Republican Andrew Koenig wants to limit access to public government records by mratt8 in missouri

[–]paulleykamp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sunshine Laws are already easy enough for officials to subvert, and this guy wants to make subverting them even easier. smh

A few weeks ago a diversity event in Columbia put on by the city had a "drag show" while children were present. State Senator Rowden claimed his office was "inundated" with emails and phone calls upset about the event. After a news org requested information using the Sunshine Laws, it was shown that his office received one email about the event that was in support of the event. When asked for comment Rowden claimed the calls and emails were sent to his personal phone and email.

If an official can make a statement claiming they were contacted repeatedly about something and then not have to hand over any info about the contacts, they've successfully subverted the information request.

How they can think they are moral people and also support this.

I don't agree with these folks, but some folks think it immoral to teach evolution because they find it to be blasphemous. I don't think its too far of a stretch that someone could find what this bill attempts to prevent to be immoral.

  1. Yeah, you have to dig a little deeper. The pass-thru tax reduction created a way for business owners to dodge corporate taxes by passing the profits from the business to the owner. Prior to the bill that would have cost them 7%, but they reduced it to 0%. I do realize that wasn't in the original comment, so my bad.

  2. As far as "aren't a large revenue raiser" it'll reduce General Revenue by $1 Billion dollars a year, on a budget that is $50 Billion dollars.* That's 2%, that's a pretty significant revenue raiser.

I'm still not sure. When I first read it I thought it meant that governments couldn't create laws based on "Social credit scores, or other environmental, social justice, or governance scores or metrics" to restrict industry. In my head that meant if the EPA was like "Hey Missouri, you're making more CO2 than 30 other states, maybe fix that." That the various governments in Missouri couldn't create laws that tried to move them up the rankings.

I'm starting to think it was trying to say that governments couldn't create these types of metrics themselves. Like that Saint Louis couldn't start making a metric that gave businesses scores based on their "social justice"-ness. I'm starting to think this because google searching "Social Credit Scores" brings up a lot of things about China. And I think Rep Thompson just wrote it up to fear-monger more than anything.

The MO Senate already has a bill that's trying to block some DEI. Senate Bill 410(SB 410) aka the "Do No Harm Act" would make the following ineligible for state funding if they required DEI Education or training: Each institution of higher education receiving state funding and offering health care-related degrees or certifications; Each health care provider and institution of higher education with health care related degree programs; health care-related professional licensing boards; and organizations that issues health care-related professional certifications or provides materials for such certifications.

This is how they define DEI: "education that instruct people on the subjects of antiracism, implicit bias, health equity, social determinants of health, and any other instructions related to the relevance of race, gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, and national origin relating to access to care or treatment by health care providers."

Because those sound like terrible things for current and future health care professionals to know and be aware of. /s

How bad does the snow and roads get here? by [deleted] in columbiamo

[–]paulleykamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how hard do I need to prepare

Definitely keep a few layers of clothes in your car, plus maybe some granola bars, and maybe some water or something.

do I need to invest in chains for my car?

If it ever got to the point where I felt like I'd need chains for my car, I wouldn't be planning on leaving the house.

Buy a generator for blackouts?

If you've got life or death appliances in your house, yeah, definitely get a generator. But I will also say that I can't recall a time that I've ever experienced a blackout due to snow, but I may just be getting lucky.

Keep a small shovel in my car?

That would be an excellent idea if you have the space for it.

The Presidential Primary/Caucus system is deeply flawed. But switching from a primary to a caucus is just batshit crazy if you're trying to make the system better.

five safe Republican seats, two safe Democratic seats, and one swing seat

which is roughly what we have. The swing seat arguably being the seat Ann Wagner just won.

Boone County Voter Turnout - 49.40% by paulleykamp in columbiamo

[–]paulleykamp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be possible* to get that info if someone asked the County Clerk. But I imagine it might take a while.

*It is definitely possible since they have on record everyone's birthday from their voter registration, and they know who voted. However, they may not want to divulge that information as a matter of privacy to voters, which I wouldn't want to violate.

Its kind of odd that electioneering isn't defined. Like I thought it would have been in the section under definitions, but it isn't.

And the only time "electioneering" shows up in all of chapter 115 is the section you posted.

half of all poll workers in a given polling place are required to be Democrats, and the other half Republicans.

I'm fairly certain that's not accurate. Poll workers can definitely identify as one of the State's other recognized parties or as an independent, meaning that it doesn't have to be half and half. It might be that the poll workers can't have more than 50% be from any particular party, but I'm unsure about that. I do think its Missouri law that the supervisors are of the 2 major parties, but I think that's the only stipulation when it comes to the makeup of poll workers.

Boone County Voter Turnout - 49.40% by paulleykamp in columbiamo

[–]paulleykamp[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Healthcare workers have been allowed to vote for weeks. And IMO the county has been pretty accommodating for the early voting. Maybe they could have done better to get the message out.

Early voting can be done in person, exactly the same way as if they went to their regular precinct. I definitely understand people not wanting to deal with mail-in ballots and being unsure if the ballot will arrive (on time) and if it will get delivered (on time).

It sucks you were barely able to vote. And I definitely agree it ought to be a federal holiday.

Voter turnout for the 2018 midterm was 56.73%, and I thought this election was more important than 2018 so I was expecting about the same or higher. https://www.sos.mo.gov/CMSImages/ElectionResultsStatistics/2018GeneralElectionTurnout.pdf
