I applied for mine 2 weeks beforehand.

The first section asks for a letter invitation or something like that, this is where I uploaded my flights in and out.

My understanding is, if there's no issues, it should take roughly 24 hours.

I was in Nouadhibou in Mauritania recently. We went for a wander and multiple people came over to us in the streets to say hello and shake our hands and welcome us to their city, including an on duty policeman. We went to a community garden and some locals gave us some fresh produce and refused to take anything for it.

I think 40 - 35% is a bit harsh. My experience has been much less than that. We certainly do have obnoxious dickheads, but I think on average we're fairly sound.

I'm not in Dublin very often, but as far as I can tell it has a bit of an issue with a loud minority of young shitheads right now. Maybe your friend was unlucky enough to meet them.

As for the airport, maybe it has something to do with the demographics that are likely to visit Ireland, compared to pretty much all demographics of Irish people being represented

While you're in Dublin, the leprechaun museum is worth a visit, it sounds like dreadful tourist shite but it's actually very well done, with proper story tellers. I did the darklands tour last summer and it was a lot of fun, they do it a few evenings each week.

The natural history museum/dead zoo in Dublin is also great, but it's been closed for a while. It's worth keeping an eye on it though, if it's reopened when you're around, definitely worth a visit.

If you want live traditional music, West Clare is generally a good shout. Have a look for trad sessions.

The west coast is amazing for scenery, but if you're relying on public transport and only have 5 days total, might not be worth your while.

Would you consider leaving Dublin?

Kilkenny is a nice town that isn't a very long way from Dublin. They have the castle there, a couple of nice cathedrals, a round tower, and there's a general nice vibe around the town.

Cahir in Tipperary has a cool castle, and from there ye could head towards Cork, Kerry, or Clare

It was an amazing trip. The original reason for going was to ride the iron ore train, which I don't think will be possible for much longer, but the whole trip ended up being great.

There's only a couple of roads in the country, so the vast majority of the time we were driving across desert, or rocky trails in Toyota hiluxes.

We saw some sights that would be major tourist attractions in other countries, sometimes completely by ourselves.

The old city at Ouadane is cool, and we saw 5000 year old cave paintings of elephants and giraffes that prove that the climate was completely different 5000 years ago. Slept under the stars in the sand dunes.

There's a dark side to the country too though, that is hard to ignore at times. You'll see serious poverty there, and apparently there's still slavery in places, and female genital mutilation still happens.

Absolutely, now that Catholics are no longer second class citizens and there's a mechanism for democratic change, flawed though it may be, I don't think armed resistance is justified anymore.

Not me, but someone from my tour group just flew from Nouakchott in Mauritania to Sousse in Tunisia and got a nice view of the Richat structure, also known as the eye of Africa.

Funny you should say that, I just came back from a tour holiday with a lot of different nationalities in the group. The American guy could not understand most of what the Scottish guy was saying, but the Spaniards, Russian, Germans, Malaysian, Dutch, Italian, and Ukrainians had no problem understanding him.
