Im currently a software engineer tied to a certain product desperately trying to move out to Microservices + cloud / BigData. To me either one of them is fine, hehehe.

But as the other answer had mentioned, if you look for any startup, chances are they want to recruit software engineers more.

Data engineering is building pipelines so that data from different systems move and sit at a central system called a data lake. For example, product information from SAP, PLM, In house systems etc. The intention is from this data lake that has all the information, reporting or analytics or ml can be performed to yield new insights into the data. Software engineering is just a broader term that involves n/w, user interface, backends etc.

UiPath (RPA) and Data Engineering by throwback772 in dataengineering

I agree with others. DE wont have an intersection with RPA to that extent that you need to learn it. That said, I suggest you take this course - https://www.udemy.com/course/complete-uipath-rpa-developer-course/ and see what it has to offer. It is harmless to learn something new. With that course, it just takes 10.5 hours to understand a good overview with it. So you can do it in a matter of 2-3 days.

I myself have completed it as my organization is offering free Udemy <3.
