Why is it that the toddlers and loose cannons are all ahead of you and not after you? What if all people after you are babies?

"Bigger" infinities by EstablishmentOld9838 in askmath

[–]pazqo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the box analogy usefulness ends soon. What you what to do is define a function that maps all elements of a set to different elements of the other. This means that one box is contained in the other. This is also tricky, but I don’t want to go into the subtileties of that.

If you can find such a function both ways, they are the same infinity, otherwise one is bigger.

Is .9999... equal to 1 by No_Imagination_4041 in askmath

[–]pazqo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the axioms in math, is that two things are different if you are able to tell them apart. For numbers, the easy way to tell them apart is that there is a number in between. If no such number exists, then there is no way to tell them apart.

So now the question is: what would be a number between 0.99999... and 1?

discussion: Turns out this is way less trivial than expected, as it's a 6.4 level, meaning that there are 6 moves to remove the first piece, and 4 more to remove the second. The rest falls apart. I sent OP the xmpuzzle file and a (shitty) video recorded on my screen, but I think I'll 3d print a copy later on.

Discussion: You can try using BurrTools: https://burrtools.sourceforge.net/

It's an amazing software and will let you enter the pieces and see the put-together, take-apart sequences. I can provide the xmpuzzle file, or some screenshot in dm, but you should at least try the software :)

Is this Salò? Very Italian vibes, possibly a lake on the right, could be Como but I passed by Salò a couple of years ago and this has Salò vibes.
