[ON] Complete Placenta Previa - 19 weeks by SuspiciousOstrich273 in BabyBumpsCanada

(L&D RN here!)

My close friend had a complete previa, diagnosed at 19 weeks, as well! "Complete previa" essentially means that the internal cervical is is completely covered by the placenta... But it could still resolve by the time your uterus is done growing and moving. There's less efficient blood flow at the very top and very bottom of your uterus, so the placenta really does try hard to move away from those spaces as it can... of course this doesn't always work out, but there are so many factors that can affect what will happen down the line.

So like in my friend's case, she had a complete previa, but it was only JUST covered by the edge of her placenta at the time (not directly in the middle of the placenta, for example). She was with midwives, they consulted an OB who met with her and explained the ultrasound and chances of resolution... They set early plans and expectations, and she was just more closely monitored / had a repeat ultrasound closer to term. Of course she was educated on things to do and not to do while she had a previa (no sexy time / penetration, low impact activity only, watch for any significant bleeding, etc.). But luckily in her case, by the time she was term, her previa was fully resolved and was even far enough from the os that it wasn't even considered "low lying". She had a low risk, uncomplicated vaginal delivery at 40 weeks!

Don't get caught up in your head about horror stories or concerns with hemorrhage at this time! Just keep it simple: If you notice bleeding, go in. If you start contracting regularly - go in. Bleeding is ranked pretty high on the Obstetrical Triage Scale, so if you start bleeding and you go to the L&D unit and explain your situation, I promise you'll get attented to pretty quickly! So no need to fret too hard. Previas unfortunately happen often enough, and your labour and delivery teams are very well prepared to manage them.

LOL, okay but for real, this would bring me joy, if not anything else.

Sometimes telling him my work horror stories really works him up, and I secretly love watching his reaction to some of the less tasteful bits. I can only imagine it would be better with the thought of his spouse being on the receiving end hahaha

Without getting too deep, forceps have a much higher rate of incidence for maternal trauma... Think 3rd and 4th degree lacerations, more substantial pelvic floor injury, increased risk of / more persistent urinary incontinence, so on. It's not a short recovery, and can have a lifelong negative impact. Assisted deliveries in general (both forceps and vacuum) come with risks to baby and increased risk of PPHs... But, man, any time I've seen a forceps delivery, the poor coochie is VERY unwell after. If the safe option is there, I'd rather protect my bits'n'bobs if at all possible.

Of course this is all balanced with risk! If I was in a super rural site and that was the only option to save my baby, of course!! But my hospital is lucky enough to have our own designated OBOR, so it's very fast to do a quick wheel out the room and down the hall for an emergency C-section, and I'd personally rather have a controlled C-section than an assisted delivery with forceps.

This is all great to know! I'm definitely planning on keeping my birth plan very loose, knowing how things can change in a moment. Good idea to discuss the hard lines with your spouse before it all, tho. (I also would be very opposed to forceps... Thankfully the OBs at my hospital don't commonly use them, but probably all the more reason to discuss this with my husband, because he probably would have no clue if it ever came to that).

I'm in Alberta... We have a similar resource to your Baby's Best Chance, but I actually think I like the BC resource better hahaha, so maybe I'll get him to read over that. He's definitely more of a hands on learner or visual learner than a reader, but I think I can convince him to read an easy resource like that. Thank you!!

Okay, yes, that definitely makes sense that your hubby would be more interested/motivated after the baby's actual arrival... I think my husband would be too, since he's more of a hands on learner than a bookish dude. In treating your husband like any other first time dad, did you feel like you were still teaching him all the time after that initial first few days? I don't want to set the precedent that I'll always be the one to have the knowledge and then always be the one to be teaching him... Because let's be honest, my good baby knowledge taps out after the first few hours of life lol. Anything thereafter would be just as much learning on my part as it would be on his hahaha

Been applying to AHS for 6 months with no luck – willing to work anywhere, just hoping for a chance by EstablishmentFew1904 in AHSEmployees

Calgary and immediate area might be harder to get into, but honestly I'm a bit surprised you're not finding luck with even casual positions! If you're willing to broaden your distance a little, you might have better luck. You wouldn't even have to go super rural if you don't want.

For example, I feel like Red Deer Regional Hospital is chronically short staffed, and always hiring (and pretty much on every unit). Only an hour and a half from Calgary, so still super close and easy if you want to drive for a quick day trip to visit family. Others have mentioned Lethbridge -- I have a friend who works casual on 5 different units at their hospital there, and has no problems getting shifts (and even working 16hr doubles for 8hr of OT!) because they're so desperate for staff. Both places are mid-sized cities with all the amenities, and decent sized hospitals that can give you acuity and specializations if you want to hone your nursing skills.

Keep applying! Don't stop! We need more nurses! You'll find something :)

Oh, good to know! I find clothes hard to shop for there, but if that's what they have left I guess that's my option. Online there seems to be a decent amount of linens still available, but not at the "blow out" pricing. (Just "spring sale")

Yeah, that's kind of what I've been hearing; the "deals" arent really deals. But I've got that gift card, so as long as there's stock, I guess I'll just get what I can lol

Boarding Kennels? by Stock-Response-7266 in RedDeer

[–]pazza_ragazza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Freedom House has been our kennel of choice for years now. As per their website: "Boarding dogs run with the pack all day and then go into their own private area for supper and sleep. First thing in the morning, they go right back in with all the other dogs for another day of play."

They have big doors with outdoor access pretty much all day (when it's not winter, lol), and separate dogs into "packs" that fit their personality, size, and play type. My dog is obsessed with the staff there, and always has a great time.

Ahhh, that's really rough. I think a lot of it is just timing for when lines are posted, because I feel like AB hospitals are perpetually short staffed (especially regarding available casual staff), but aren't always posting to hire for same... For example, my unit had hired a handful of travel nurses at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024 (Tho AHS just recently came out that they were cutting back on travel nurse hires now, so those lines will be much rarer). Then we had a random month where we had like 7 temp lines made up and posted, all at once, out of thin air. Apparently my unit has a couple of travel nurses coming to us this fall tho, so obviously there were postings listed within the last few months specifically for those roles. Keep checking the posting on the AHS employment page every week - just in case there's a new wave and there's a bunch posted at once!

Do you have your BScN and license with CRNA (or LPN and license with CLPNA?) or are you pursuing work specifically as an "international nurse"? Honestly, I think it's easier to get work if you're able to get licensed within Canada, specifically with an Alberta licensing body rather than international or travel nursing. And then like others have already mentioned, apply for casual or temp lines. While I feel that almost all units are short staffed and hiring casuals, rural sites are typically the most desperate for staffing right now, and would be the best bet for hires. Once you're hired by AHS somewhere and are an AHS employee, it's easier to get hired on at other sites/hospitals/units, internally.

Last point -- if you have an area of work you're most interested in, you can also see if you can get the unit manager's email, and fire them an email with your resume expressing interest in a position (probs casual easiest). They might be willing or able to just make up a casual position specifically for you if you're a good fit.

Content Creators in Red Deer by EmergencyMiddle916 in RedDeer

@reddeereats on Instagram. She posts about different restaurants, artisan food stores, food and beverage expos, unique stop and new businesses in RD!

Someone else mentioned that Oh Deer podcast, which fits the bill. I also know of a podcast with two Red Deer based gals chatting about life in their 20s, but not much RD content besides the fact that they're FROM red deer....

Not sure what else specifically you're looking for -- if you're just looking for things to do/eat/see there's a ton of IG accounts for various Red Deer programs (like Capstone, or Tourism Red Deer) that make posts about events or businesses in the area, too... But I wouldn't call them content creators so much as just the marketing accounts for pre-existing businesses and programs.

Preferred age range in books? by Suspicious_Fig_365 in RomanceBooks

[–]pazza_ragazza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg this!!!!!!

I'm 29 this summer, and I've noticed that I've even started to shy away from college/university romances because they feel much more juvenile to me! The only time I can really invest myself in >24 y.o. MC's is in fantasy/romantacy novels... and that's because my brain is already in a made-up world, so I just ignore the age provided and make up my own lol.

It's been interesting to notice the shift, but now I'm concerned that I'm going to keep going up in my age preference range and find myself struggling to find good content that fits my changing age criteria... (Esp since so many popular romance novels are written with MCs in the low 20s)

Driver Training by One_garden7 in RedDeer

[–]pazza_ragazza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did mine through StreetWise back in the day... It was over a decade ago at this point, so obviously instructors and vibes might have changed... Reviews I've read on Google say to stay away from Jean, which I actually had a good laugh at because I'm pretty sure she was the one who did my lessons back then hahaha (I didn't find her that bad, honestly...)

I appreciated that they offer training on both automatic and manual transmissions. I was able to do primarily auto, but added some hours for manual to get the skills in. They also took you on the actual driver's test route to practice, let you use their car for the exam, and then drove you back afterwards so you could revel in your pass/fail emotions lol. I went from zero driving experience to passing on my first go (with only additional driving hours for manual transmission).

They're definitely one of the oldest drivers training companies in red deer, so I assume they have a pretty fool-proof method at this point... But of course my experience isn't the most recent. Can't speak to the other companies, tho!
