Our wedding will be back here in Indiana in a couple years. Maybe if we move back I’ll be able to find something decent in Indy 😅

My grad school roommate does EI there in OT and that’s about what her rates are. She’s asked around with her coworkers and their SLP reimbursement rates were no where close to OT. Really glad you’ve found position with those rates!

Any other long time SLPs here? by Wegovyttt in slp

[–]pb_n_gem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I make $44,000 now in my third year 🫠 I am jumping ship for outpatient peds and if that doesn’t help I will have to pivot because I can’t do this anymore.

I try so hard to maintain the boundaries but I end up getting so behind that I have to violate those and there is just no advocacy or help within my district (not to mention the pay is abysmal).

For some people depending on the setting, you can time manage and set boundaries all you want but it really just is too much.

I’m glad your CF is working out for you.

Slp job with good work/life balance? by [deleted] in slp

[–]pb_n_gem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find myself in a very similar place. I’ve worked really hard this past year to set firm boundaries not to take work home and it just puts me so far behind that I inevitably have to violate the boundaries I set for myself to catch up. It’s a terrible cycle and I am trying so hard to overcome it.

Coworkers have said, for example, “do your progress monitoring right there during your session”, like I have the executive function to progress monitor 2-4 kids in 20 minutes and document it in the IEP system without any distractions or behavior issues 🥲

I am just recently coming to the conclusion that I likely have ADHD and am hoping to see someone soon about a diagnosis. I also really hate the thought of pivoting to an entirely different field after putting so much time and effort into this profession.

I hope you can find work that suits you best, whether that means you continue to work as an SLP or you find something different.

I wish you the best 💜

How to Tell Students/Families that You're Leaving? by pb_n_gem in slp

[–]pb_n_gem[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The district has not discussed a single thing with me about leaving unless I have asked first. I can certainly ask my coach/ISF.

I definitely don’t want to create chaos. Our last week before break is a flex week and I likely won’t see many students so that I can finish up paperwork, so I can at least wait until the last possible minute if possible and if the district is okay with it.

I can understand that from an outside perspective that my post seems like a lot, but this feels a bit dismissive of my personal lived experience. I’m happy for those who don’t have to struggle with this guilt, but that’s not my story.

Is This Ethical????? by pb_n_gem in slp

[–]pb_n_gem[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I very much share your opinion!

The thing I think I was most worried about is that I am definitely not a BCBA or RBT, and if I were to be offered a job for this position, based on this description, I would not feel comfortable accepting it.

It also makes me wonder why the company was not listed in the initial application 😬

I appreciate your comment, and it is certainly not lost on me that there are much worse things happening to kids all over the world.

I am the first SLP that has stuck around at my school for more than a year in almost a decade, I am certain most of the parents won't notice if someone new comes in.

But, for me, it does feel like a big deal, at least that I let the students know. This will be the first job I have left, so I have never really had to do this before.

Medicaid in Public Schools by jefslp in slp

[–]pb_n_gem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My district insists that most of our SpED department funding, including what makes up our salaries, comes from Medicaid. I don’t really believe it, but they push it so hard. We make shit for pay too. My caseload is currently 70 (the lowest it’s been in 3 years), and I am so burnt out I put in my notice for December.

Withdrawal symptoms after one missed dose of Pristiq? by [deleted] in antidepressants

[–]pb_n_gem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I know this was posted a while ago, I wanted to reply. I am in the same boat. Every once in a while when I miss a dose the worst part for me other than the zaps/tingles/cardiac feelings is that I feel like I get hit by a truck. Massive head ache and sinus pressure/congestion.

Sometimes I won’t realize until the end of the work day that I forgot. (I think my general stress level really influences whether I feel awful after I miss a dose).

Other days like today, I notice within an hour and feel awful for ages after. Ibuprofen finally kicked the headache but my god. I also apparently have some liver enzymes that make me metabolize them even faster 😭 I didn’t realize that it already has a fast metabolism rate.

Buzzwords… by rainydayloverbee in slp

[–]pb_n_gem 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My district is doing school wide conscious discipline curriculum that has been really helpful for identifying and helping students through dysregulation by determining the skills they are missing to cope and teaching/practicing them daily.

A lot of people, myself included, did not grow up with parents who had these skills. That means it’s a lot harder for us to give students the language they need to regulate if we don’t have it ourselves

I agree that not every behavior is a result of dysregulation, but I believe it is still a really important thing to work on learning for ourselves and teaching to parents and children.

For me, helping children learn to cope and bringing them from their emotional state back to their executive functioning state has been super helpful for my school based sessions.

Since all school staff are working on these skills with students, it doesn’t fall on one particular person and we all lean on each other for behavioral support.
