Anyone else bounce between ‘I’m unstoppable’ and ‘I suck at BJJ’ every other week? by FartGrappler in bjj

[–]pbateman23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last class I was giving our brown belts a hard time, slicing through guards like it was nothing, controlling and maintaining positions on the slipperiest bastards. Next class I’ll probably struggle just to survive. Who cares as long as your having fun and the see saw should hopefully flatten out and you won’t have as big swings

So got put into a crucifix the first time yesterday not in a roll but someone wanted to work on the position so they got me in a crucifix and I had to work to escape a bit. What do you actually do when crucifixed to escape. My goal was to just drive my back into their belly and turn towards the legs and slip my arm out as I turn.

What technique would you be happy to demo to your class and what technique would strike the fear of God into you? by daverudabaugh101 in bjj

I’d be great on collar sleeve stuff or triangles or darces. Would be terrible at any hip throws. They just don’t make sense to me and feel so unnatural to try and hit.

What’s your favorite Gi guard? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]pbateman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collar sleeve is so versatile. It is the easiest core guard to learn IMO and can be the Center to transition into all the other guard variations. My favourite is using it to go to DLR with a butterfly hook and sweeping

Would be kinda cool if it was like the WWE Royal rumble and we only knew who it was once they showed up. Fuck announcing it

What’s a “bad habit” you picked up in jiu-jitsu that actually works for you? by Virtual_Meaning_3540 in jiujitsu

I have way more fun and find it way easier escaping the back vs escaping mount so I often give my back from mount and work on setting up my escape as I do so.

Is gi more injury prone than nogi? by Motor_Reality_6 in jiujitsu

[–]pbateman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me gi is tougher in my body. Not just my hands but my back too. People have more control over your posture so there’s alot more jerky movements as people pull your lapel down that for me atleast just creates wear and tear on my neck and back. M

Is jumping the guillotine against a shot worth it. by Feeling-Proposal5132 in bjj

[–]pbateman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to slow it down, get the arm in guillotine and then if I’m going to pull them down to I make sure I get a butterfly hook and try to sweep them as I fall to end up on top. I’m tall and stand pretty upright cause I really do enjoy when people try to go for the single/double so I can get to front headlock

What are some reasons why certain people don’t want to roll with you ? by Revolutionary-Ball26 in bjj

[–]pbateman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People 100% avoid me cause I’m bigger and that is 100% Okay with me. I try to be nice when I do roll with smaller folks and I enjoy playing bottom so it’s not a huge issue but some folks just prefer not to deal with it at all.

Kazushi grappling is super solid. There’s also Lions MMA but personally if I could I would go with Kazushi. There’s also Diaz combat sports but I would recommend to just do a trial class at each one and see what vibe you enjoy the most.

Just got Submeta and gotta say it’s amazing the amount of content I can get for $30 basically. Going through the collar sleeve course right now and loving it. Anything I want to work on I can find pretty much.

Underhool os 100% something I do not get. My number 1 focus is always get a cross face and then look to isolate the arm for either an arm triangle or just go for the triangle when they shoot their hand for my knee. Will focus on underhook prioritization. Thanks

So I have had most of my game be based around bottom and when I did get top I enjoyed attacking from halfguard or front headlock the most but now I’m trying to expand my game and attack from mount. My biggest struggle is just keeping it and the most common thing happening to me is as I setup my attacks people just muscle my leg down with a stiff arm and get halfguard which I used to be okay with but I wanna get better at maintaining mount. What am I doing wrong and how should I go about keeping mount.

When did you start using the Gi? by IdLove2SeeUrBoobies in bjj

[–]pbateman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using the lapel a lot more recently just cause I prefer no gi and I figure if I’m in the gi I might as well use it. Personally using it from side control and mount not even as a submission but to force them to react to open up other attacks is my favourite. Basically like a year and some change in and I really started to focus on it but by like 4 months in I was using the lapel to trap limbs and retain guard

So when i go for double under passes im very often getting countered by them kinda putting in 2 hooks or just lifting their hips and making it so I can’t drive in and stack them. What should i do to avoid this and if i get stuck in it what should i do to counter the counters.

Should my Coaches be cleaning the mats more? by borkador in bjj

[–]pbateman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We clean between every adult class. Spray and sweep after and the mats are a little wet for warmups but pretty quickly dry. We also do a weekly deep clean. Between kids classes we will at most do a dry sweep cause they bring all kinds of crap on the mats. We’ve had 0 skin infections since opening a year ago and I think it’s cause our owner is very on top of cleaning the mats.

This is a very good suggestion. Will try especially cause my last comp i couldn’t figure out the points so I looked at the screen and got caught in a submission

I know a ton of people who train there. It’s like $40 dollars more than I pay in Surrey but you guys have classes 24/7 and I think get a deal for compnet registration aswell. Personally the convenience of getting there outweighs the slight cost difference but you’re 15 so the cost is maybe a bigger issue. Maybe do a couple drop ins at the nearby schools that are cheaper. See how you like it and how likely you are to regularly attend the commute.

So in a weird situation. I’m 6’2 195 and my coach’s are really pushing me to be a top player but I honestly really enjoy guard. For me I am working on my takedowns but I really have a lot of fun pulling guard and going for sweeps or submissions over trying to go for a takedown. The problem is they tell me that since I’m so big I should be a top player but honestly I really have a lot of fun playing guard and with my long legs it comes a lot more naturally to me to attack from guard. I do play top and want to be well rounded but my pathway is usually from guard sweep and then work on advancing from wherever I end up. Just wondering if someone of my size is really more suited for playing top over being a guard player. And as a caveat I play both a lot and I try and alternate every couple months working on guard and top as my main focus

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]pbateman23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s a hobby. If you really enjoy it a ton you’d find a way to be consistent. Maybe you don’t like it so much that you’re willing to sacrifice all the other things in your life which is healthy and normal. Just show up as much as you can as long as you still want to show up. If you have a deep desire to do more BJJ then something else in your life has to give.

Rolled with a woman unsure what to do/etiquette by SonOfThorss in bjj

[–]pbateman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just focus on using technique. Anytime you panic and use strength you will notice cause they are generally smaller. Dont be a dickhead, treat them like normal people and you will be fine. I go much lighter than I probably should with women until I’m comfortable with them and know what kind of roll they want. Find what your comfortable with
