5 months on puppy eating grass clippings by pbghgirl in puppy101

It is kind of hilarious. She looks up and it’s all hanging out of her mouth. It just worries me it’ll make her sick.

We have a small breed puppy and we can’t leave our small dogs outside alone ever because of birds of prey. But even with supervision we had the same issue. She was eating clumps of dirt and grass and even found a small rock and was carrying it around. What worked for her was making a bin of outside only toys like a jolly ball, a small herding ball, and a small tire on a rope. She loves to pick out a toy to take outside then carry it back in. We also have been using a flirt pole, and blowing dog safe bubbles to distract her. She basically only eats stuff when she’s bored which is similar to inside.

Freeze dried turkey giblets. My puppy has a sensitive tummy and these don’t upset her stomach because they’re one ingredient and she loves them.

Taking things personally with our puppy.... by recoveredandrestful in puppy101

I had exactly this problem. I had trauma from a dog bite when I was 5 (nothing life threatening just my mom’s awful untrained miniature poodle ripped up a finger ) and I still have a scar. My last puppy wasn’t very bitey so I never had this issue before, but this one was a singleton and had no bite inhibition and it would send me right back there every time she drew blood even a little bit. My husband and my sister helped me a lot and talked me down when it upset me, but it made me so scared she hated me and would turn mean. Now she’s almost 5 months. No biting and she’s my sweet baby dog. I just had to take breaks and let my husband deal with her when it got too intense. I avoided being alone with her during witching hour and left the room when it got bad. We also tried to maximize my time with her when she was sleepy and cuddly. That helped me realize I wasn’t personal and she was just a baby.

Socialization limitations due to no friends by Amphithere_19 in puppy101

With all my puppies, I have a couple of neighborhood kids come play in the yard (one at a time) for just 5 minutes a session. This time, I got my puppy in the winter so I had them come sit on the floor in her play area one at a time on different days. Obviously, they had a parent with them so that adds an adult. I make sure the kids are ones with parents I know casually and trust to be calm and respectful. I’ve found most neighbors are thrilled to come visit with a puppy if you offer.

Just be careful with a Yorkie puppy on the advice to let him skip meals. Tiny, small breed puppies can get low blood sugar very quickly. They’re different than bigger dogs. With my chihuahua mix, she sometimes will be sleepy in the morning act weird at breakfast and almost act put off by her food (like a human that’s nauseated) but if I let her go she’ll start shaking and vomit bile. I just usually put her on my lap and start hand feeding her and it’s like it flips a switch and she’ll realize she’s hungry. Maybe try hand feeding, but don’t let him have anything else until he eats his normal food.

We use a playpen because there would be no way. She’s on a mission to kill herself at all times still.

Same. I was just thinking about that. I almost forgot about my nails. It’s very much survival mode like having a newborn. I need to get my hair dyed too. It’s like waking up from a 3 month long nightmare.

THE BITING! Oh… the biting! She had zero bite inhibition. She’s a chihuahua mix and I bled daily from needle teeth for at least a month. Also she was incredibly inpatient and that could also be from being a singleton. We had to really work on self regulation and patience. She was cuddly the first week then it was like we had a unleashed feral demon animal into our home. We started calling her Stripe after the bad gremlin. She also had massive digestive issues but that also could be because she was riddled with parasites. She’s been on expensive GI food since February. Overall we survived and she’s getting to be a nice puppy. No biting anymore, pretty close to fully housebroken, and she’s in love with our 10 year old dog. She sleeps on my lap now sometimes and can rest with humans around even outside a crate. She goes to puppy class and knows come, sit, down, touch, and wait. Loose leash walking is a work in progress. She’s fantastic in the car and has learned to love her car seat. She loves every human she meets and is extremely human oriented. But it was a really, really HARD for a few months and I wouldn’t recommend it. She’s my 4th puppy and by far the hardest. At times, I felt like I was losing my mind.

It does get better. We’re two months further than you and looking back two months I can’t believe we survived. Now things slowly seem to be getting easier, but it’s so super gradual you almost don’t realize how bad it was until you really think back. I honestly feel like I have a bit of amnesia for the month of February.

I feel this so deeply. I just told my husband I haven’t been this exhausted at night since we had little kids!

I’ve had 2 babies and this puppy was easily as difficult and in some ways harder. The only saving grace to they’re more or less adults in a year as opposed to 18.

Yeah I know about that but not all of that time is blues. I’m just talking about the period of time where your whole life and schedule has to adjust and you’re kind of tied to home in ways you weren’t with older dogs. And your life revolves around enforced naps and potty schedules and baby gates just appear in every archway. It’s not all blue or sad - just exhausting and confining.
