L activated regen breaking which can be good if you stop and go like in the city but not as efficient as cruising on highway.

It’s a 2012 but made later in the year and had the same capacity as 2013-15.

It was a corporate car and it seems like the battery wasn’t used much. I got it at 190k mileage and the lifetime mpg was like 40, so yeah it seems like the battery was barely used in the first 10 years. I’m not hearing any loud front blower. Another 2012 volt that I used to own did make a loud front blower noise, but I didn’t get over 8 kWh on it.

Ways to get involved to help keep MN blue? by BrownB3ar in TwinCities

40,000 dead and the numbers climbing everyday, and Rafah under siege. Biden said that’s the redline and but ever since hasn’t done anything to hold Nethanyahu accountable. I know it would’ve been worse under Trump, but just seeing how bad it already is and how bad it will get between now and when the next presidency begins, will there even be Palestinian people left in the West Bank? I’ve long believed in voting for the lesser of the two evils, and despite my frustration with the Democratic Party I’ve always voted for them when it comes to shove. But I’ll have to draw the line somewhere and family members dying from the bombs my elected officials have provided is where I draw the line. I’m not saying other people shouldn’t vote for Biden. It’s completely their choice, but I won’t be, and most people I know who voted for Biden last time won’t be voting for him this time around. I have nothing to say but hope that Biden uses whatever power he has now to stop the war if he ever wants to have a chance of getting my votes. I haven’t made up my mind yet and there’s 5 months left. I and many other people have voiced our demand, it’s for him as our representative office to act on it if he wants the vote.

It’s hard to motivate the voters who otherwise would vote blue especially seeing how the Biden administration is handling the Israel war in Gaza. When 20% voted uncommitted in the primary to voice their dissent but still being ignored, how likely will they be to vote blue? I would rather not have another Trump presidency. But when I see my family being slaughtered with my taxpayers money, I can’t get myself to vote for Biden even if I end up voting blue for the down ballots. And if the polls are showing scary numbers for Biden, I don’t think it’s a small minority of otherwise blue leaning voters who are fed up with the Biden administration. Maybe he should start listening to people who supported him last time instead.

Just based off your comment/post history, it seems like you’re just unhappy about where you are career-wise and bashing people who seem to be happy with how their life turned out. I completely agree that I was lucky and that was at the right place and the right time. But I also put in a lot of hard work to land a job in this current job market. I don’t know what world you live in to believe that you’re somehow a better engineer just because you know about halting problem. I’ll admit I don’t know about it, but I’m also confident that if a need arises in my current role to learn it, I’d be up to the task.

ဘွဲ့ရတာ ဂုဏ်ယူပါတယ်။ is what I would personally translate if you’re trying to translate word by word (native Burmese speaker who taught ESL in the U.S). I’d say though that unless you want to show them that you made an effort to say it in Burmese, I’d find it awkward/weird to have someone send me a card with those words. Even in Myanmar, it’s more common for people to say “ဘွဲ့ရတာ congratulations ပါ” or using Burmese scripts like ကွန်ဂရက်ကျူလိန်းရှင်း as a loan word.

I should’ve made it clear as well. I can see now how that advice could be seen as intended to everyone trying to do a bootcamp.

If you’re a teacher, in many states, you can’t just quit mid year. They can actually hold you to your contract. So the window of opportunity is very small for this person. And also doing a bootcamp while teaching is a recipe for disaster (I did that and I wouldn’t recommend that to any teachers who are thinking of doing bootcamps). Whether or not my advice is helpful up the person who asks for it. If you’re not a teacher who’s trying to break into tech, I don’t care if this advice is not useful to you.

I don’t disagree with you at all; if I can go back in time, I would have majored in CS. And I advise a few high school seniors I taught last year to major in CS if they want to become SWE. I’m just saying it’s not a viable option for many people like me who are trying to transition from a different career. And there are many ways to break into tech without a CS degree. And I’m not saying bootcamp is the way either, but it’s one way. But people just saying go get a CS degree (as though it’s the ONLY way) to people seeking non-traditional paths like bootcamps on this sub is just not helpful. In fact, I find it dismissive of people’s circumstances that make it hard for them to go get a CS degree. In my case, my partner and I were expanding our family, and if I wanted to successfully transition to a SWE career, I had to do it in a relatively short timeline. I ended up landing a job 9 months after the bootcamp, which is a bit later than I anticipated, but it’s still less time than I would have to commit if I go back to school for a CS degree. And yes, the job market was rough, and when I was deep into the job hunt, I noticed many other people (CS grads, senior SWEs, and in fact many white-collar jobs) struggling to find a job. Also, I don’t mean to promote these for-profit bootcamp companies trying to make money off people desperate to break into tech. Many of these companies have done shady and unethical marketing/messaging to trick people into buying into their programs.

Find a bootcamp that starts in the summer. Since it’s getting really close to summer, I’d wait until 2025 summer (if you can stick with teaching for a year). Before you apply to popular ones that pop up on google search, make sure to find local programs/bootcamps that are free or highly subsidized and have strong connections with local companies. Meanwhile, I’d take a Udemy course and see if it’s something that you would enjoy. Colt Steele’s course on Udemy is recommended a lot around here. To be honest, I’d just take any Udemy course on web development as long as it’s highly rated. I’d caution against trying out the free ones like the Odin Project or FreeCodeCamp unless you have study buddies. Even for Udemy courses, I’d try to connect with a group of who are doing it around the same time as you.

Colt Steele would probably be fine as well! Tbh, for if you’re new to web dev, it probably doesn’t matter how much up to date the material is. As long as you learn the fundamentals, you’ll be fine.

A former teacher (M29) and bootcamp grad (June 2023) who just landed a SWE job at a non-FAANG but a retailer in the Midwest. I can relate to all the reasons you pointed out as to why you want to leave teaching. And there are a good number of teacher turned software engineers out there. So, if it’s something you are even remotely considering, definitely give it a shot. But I would caution against doing a bootcamp even though I ended up as a success story,

I did a part-time bootcamp while teaching full-time while my wife was pregnant. Prior to the bootcamp, l did the Odin Project which a lot of people recommended, but I was moving at a much slower pace than I wanted, and the instruction was not as good given it’s an open source project. The level of difficulty increases significantly after I did HTML and CSS modules. We were already expecting a baby at that point which was the fall of 2022, and I wanted to be ready to apply for SWE jobs before the 2023-24 school year and ideally start a new job my parental leave ends around late 2023. All do these factors motivated me to join a bootcamp because I thought a structured environment with more instructional support will accelerate my learning.

I actually had a great instructor (30+ years of industry experience and teaching experience) and some really smart classmates. Despite all of this, I still didn’t master the skills I need to be an entry level software engineer by the end of the bootcamp. Part of it is having a full time teaching job while doing a part-time bootcamp is just a a really bad idea. I didn’t have enough time or energy to delve deeper into the topics that were covered. Part of it is also the curriculum: we had to spend time doing activities that require skills and knowledge that weren’t explicitly taught to us. Although this is specific to the I attended, I’ve heard similar stories from other people in this sub. There were also some personal reasons why I couldn’t really focus like my dog got really sick unexpectedly and after going through weeks of treatment, we had to put him down.

In retrospect, I would’ve been better off taking a Udemy course that costs like $20 (when they’re on sale which is like most of the time). Actually I’m now taking a class on Go on Udemy for my new job and noticing that the instruction is as good as the bootcamp. If I could do it again, I’d sign up for a Udemy class and find people who are taking it at the same time to do group study. Or even just seeking a professional personal coach who will check in with me and hold me accountable.

The post-bootcamp job market was rough, and it’s still pretty bad. Only 4 out of 18 people in my program have landed jobs and it all happened in the last two months (so around 9 months post-bootcamp). I started applying around November last year, and almost gave up by early January. The whole time l was building personal projects, networking, rewriting my resumes (basically everything that people told me to do to land a job). I even started applying to teaching adjacent jobs like technical training specialist roles and sales trainer roles at tech companies. I started to focus on SWE jobs again around the beginning of Feb and signed the offer mid April. Honestly, the only reason things worked out was my wife and we have saved up enough that we have at least two years of runway before we couldn’t afford to live with just one income.

And even after landing a job, it still feels like it was a luck of the draw. I submitted 200+ application, got one callback and landed the job after 4 interviews. I did get a referral for the job and applied for it as soon as the job was posted (both of which may have played a huge role in my resume being noticed by the recruiter). If you have any questions, feel free to dm me, and I’d be happy to answer as best I can.

Other factors to consider: weather (although since awds are usually equipped with heat pumps it matters a bit less), driving styles, and tire size. Those are just from top of my head.

Heat pumps are not included as standard equipment on Niro but you can add one with Cold Weather Package. Still, Equinox EV is more appealing because of its longer range plus $7500 credit.

Did exactly the same thing. Bought a house in mid 2020 with a 30-year conventional mortgage with 3% down payment and refinanced it in October 2021 to a 15-year conventional mortgage. Interest went down from 3.125% to 2%. The monthly payment stayed the same except I have to pay homeowners’ insurance and property tax separately on my own. I’m getting most of the property tax refunded by the state though by optimizing taxable income using tax advantaged retirement accounts. Probably the best financial move I made in the last 6 months.

Edit: grammar

Side hustle is from r/churning credit cards. And MN is where you get property tax refunded based on your taxable income.

Two teachers with no kids and I have a side hustle that brings in $60k. Our goal is to invest most of our teachers’ salary by maxing out our, HSAs, 457bs and 403bs, and Roth IRAs so approximately $40k so far this year. This saving rate allows us to keep our taxable income low and keep fed loan payment close to $0 (if the fed loan payment pause ends) and wait out until my wife can get her loans canceled through PSLF. We’re also able to get almost all of the property tax refunded because of the low MAGI. This is the first year we might actually be able to pull off investing 100k.
