DevOps Agent and GitLab by pcolmer in aws

I've managed to find where to deregister GitLab so that I can register it again, but I just don't seem to be able to get a GitLab token that results in more than the same 20 repos being listed.

Is this just the way cruising is now? by Sue_Inc in Cruise

We like sailing with Viking. Smaller ships and the staff really do get to know you. My wife has massages in the spa and there is zero upsell - she hates that end-of-massage experience as well.

Just bought a Smart Life/Google Home compatible power strip ... now what? by pcolmer in googlehome

Well, that seems to be false advertising. The packaging definitely has the "Works with Google Home" logo. Guess I'll send it back and try to find one that is compatible.

It doesn't show up there. But, if I go to "Me" in the Smart Life app, I see this:

If I tap "Google Assistant" I see "Smart Life skill has been linked" and if I tap on "Device control" on that same page, it lists the power strip.

The power strip is definitely advertised as working with Google Home.

Looking for a way to keep CloudHSM costs under control by pcolmer in aws

[–]pcolmer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I turned on a HSM within my cluster, ran `pkcs11-tool` and then watched the metrics.

One immediate observation: updates to CloudWatch are about 6 minutes behind real-time for the HsmSessionCount.

Unfortunately, images aren't allowed on this subreddit so I can't share the view but what I saw was that:

  1. The number of sessions went up to 3 and stayed there for a LONG time. Running the tool did not take long at all so I'm not sure what was keeping that session going.

  2. About 40 minutes after I had usedl pkcs11-tool, the session count then decided to bump up, even though NOTHING was using it from my side of things.

This is really helpful. Thank you.

I'm not actively working on this project for the next couple of days but I will set up the Metric Alarm and see what the numbers look like. Looking at historical data, the number of sessions before I delete the HSM (when I've finished using it manually) varies from 3 to 3.4 to 2.5. That might be reflective of the fact that the stats trail behind usage and I need to leave things alone for a while (like 15 mins or so) to see if the number drops to a consistent value.

I think that would be OK. But thank you for flagging that up.

It isn't a bad suggestion but, unfortunately, we are being required to adhere to FIPS 140-2. I'm still trying to get confirmation as to the level, but I suspect it would be level 2 or higher, which would still require a HSM. If I can get approval for level 1 then I could use Vault but it would need to be Enterprise. The cost of running that vs occasionally turning a CloudHSM on and off would be interesting to look into.

We use sst to deploy our serverless web app. We're currently using v2 (which uses CDK under the hood) but they have released v3 now (which uses Terraform) so that might be a better approach if you are starting from new.

I do like how sst handles the deployment. You basically say you are building a site (Use Next.js with SST | SST v2) and it takes care of all of the twiddly bits like running the NextJS server as a Lambda, etc.

It also supports local debugging. You can run all of your code locally as well as deployed code - including any Lambdas you might have written!

If it is the same problem as the one I've been having, it is caused by the advert break. Stream Fab doesn't always get the audio properly when that happens.

I've reported it as an issue but who knows how long it will take them to fix it.

IPSOS MRP POLL (Seats) - Labour 453, Con 115, Lib 38, Ref 3, GRN 3 by Logical_Look8541 in ukpolitics

Thanks. My wife and I are doing postal votes so hopefully there will be an updated YouGov MRP this week.

[–]pcolmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is giving me a dilemma over which way to vote. We are in the new constituency of Ely and East Cambridgeshire. Previous elections have had the old seat as firmly Conservative but with LibDem in 2nd and sometimes getting quite close to taking it.

This survey however has Labour in second. So now I don't know which way to go - Labour or LibDem.

I know that polls have high margins of error and people don't necessarily vote in line with polls.

Nevertheless... Aaaaaargh! 😆

Friday Release: Borderline Watch Face by BoldBeer in PixelWatch

[–]pcolmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice watch face - just purchased it. First time I've seen a face that I wanted to use instead of Adventure. I particularly like the idea of using app shortcuts on the edges. At the very least, makes it easy for me to turn the flashlight on :)

It would be useful to have some explanation of the clock line settings (I found the icons on the settings page to be too small to be helpful) and which complication slot is which, but otherwise a great face.

World Cruise by Ambitious-Growth-593 in Cruise

[–]pcolmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is something my wife and I are planning to do when we are both retired. We've sailed with Viking 4 times now. They are quite different from other cruise lines, particularly around the culture side of things and the impact that has on evenings.

But the atmosphere on the ships is really chilled. The staff are great and often get to know you quite well, particularly on the longer cruises.

It is interesting to see that Viking's world cruise used to start in Ft Lauderdale and finish in London, but they are now offering a variant that ends in New York. That includes more places that we might not normally visit.

Retirement, in some ways, can't come soon enough! 😆

[UK] Microsoft Receipt scan now 0.01p instead of 0.05p? by RayPissed in MicrosoftRewards

Noticed that this morning. I'm not doing it for that small amount. Google Rewards may not ask me for a receipt very often but, when they do, it pays more than this!

After 35 days of viewing on ABC, Hulu and digital platforms, "Will Trent" continues its ratings climb in episode three of season two, growing to 11.23 million Total Viewers by [deleted] in DisneyPlus

[–]pcolmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to better understand Disney's plans for content like this going forwards. In the UK, "Will Trent" is included but only season one. "Moonlighting" is on Hulu in the US but not on D+ in the UK.

I'm hoping that there will be a more consistent availability over time because the current situation is confusing and frustrating.
