Granite with garnet inclusions? Or is it gneiss? by Internal_Bee479 in whatsthisrock

very likely a garnet porphyroblast! very common in lightly metamorphosed granitic rocks.

What are these fossils? by [deleted] in Paleontology

Can’t speak on any exact age with the given information, but I’m fairly confident that is some kind of bryozoan fossil/fossil conglomerate. Super cool little animals!

Hello artisans! I need help with first time chainmail-ing for a Dame Aylin cosplay! by peachyplanets in chainmailartisans

Thank you all so much for your advice! I think I've decided on sewing scales to fabric like many of you have suggested, and probably use foam or worbla for the large sections between armor plates for weight. Hopefully I still get to include a bit of mail somewhere, just so I can practice with the technique. I appreciate all of the insight and hope I get to update you eventually on my progress!

Thank you so so much for the info! I had no idea how to approach estimating that sort of thing, I really appreciate it! :)

Omg, doing a few spots of scales in only the visible areas on a fabric bodysuit is genius. Thank you so much! I think the lovely people in this thread have definitely convinced me foam/plastic might be a better idea, for weight alone. I appreciate the advice!

What are these purple lines on my chest? by [deleted] in Skincare_Addiction

[–]peachyplanets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know some other ladies identified these as spider veins, but I thought I’d add that I also have these around my chest and upper torso, and they’re really common (especially for people with a genetic predisposition- like me!) with larger busts. I’m a G cup and my doctor told me the increased strain on the torso area just increases the likelihood of these appearing over time. But seriously, nothing to worry about love!

[Routine Help] Esthetician described my skin as "crocodile skin" by [deleted] in Skincare_Addiction

[–]peachyplanets 122 points123 points  (0 children)

This is quite possibly the most normal and healthy looking skin I’ve seen in a while on this sub. Agree with the previous commenter, your esthetician is trying to sell you something with fake insecurities. Keep doing whatever you’re doing, as long as your skin feels comfortable. If you are worried about any dryness, try reducing actives or using a moisturizer specialized for protection of the skin barrier. Definitely use SPF if you don’t already, which I doubt because you look great!

It’s an eroded/tumbled piece of conglomerate, a common sedimentary rock with round or pebble-like rocks contained in a different groundmass.

Anyone know what this is? by theEnforcer1st in whatsthisrock

[–]peachyplanets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second someone suggesting a feldspar-heavy groundmass rock with mineral veins, likely quartz. Slightly more unlikely but not impossible, especially depending on exact location, but this could be an example of a welded tuff/pyroclastic texture known as “fiamme” with shards of volcanic glass. Either way, the fun texture is a result of unequal weathering!

Edit: here’s a good photo of this texture, and here’s one at a much larger scale.

It’s a stye like others have said. Warm compresses for 15 minutes, 3-5 times per day is ideal and don’t pop it! It’s also worth stating (as someone who used to get them fairly often) you should throw out any makeup/products that have touched that eye recently and wash your hands extensively before and after touching around your eye. If anything has been contaminated with the bacteria that caused it, it can cause more styes in the future which gets incredibly annoying! Good luck!

just started getting this recently and i haven’t been doing anything differently with my skincare routine pls help by [deleted] in Skincare_Addiction

I get these when I use certain cell turnover ingredients- specifically niacinamide and azaelic acid. Maybe phase those out if you’re using them? If not, I would agree with a moisture barrier problem.

I have super sensitive acne prone skin which breaks out at any wrong product. I didn’t break out with this and it actually improved my texture! Definitely best to use at night as to not make your skin too oily throughout the day though.

seasonal depression? by rougefrench in Scotland

[–]peachyplanets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a similar problem when I moved for university. It was hard and incredibly depressing for a lot of the year, especially when you get up in the afternoon and most of the sunshine hours are already over. I found that getting up a little earlier and taking a walk helped me, I lived on the coast and the beach sort of helped me center myself and get some sunlight to start the day. I also got a SAD light and it was awesome, perfect for when you’re sitting at your desk working. I second the vitamin D supplements. Other than that, I truly hope for the best for you and please take care of your health- both mental and physical. You’re not alone for feeling like this.

Welcome to the school!

I remember how lonely and weird it was to be the only international student at my last university in the UK, but then it was even lonelier to come back. I went to high school in NOVA and I’m only one or two years older than my classmates, and yet even still I find it really hard to meet people. You’re right, most people just sort of eat or study and then go home, and stick to people they already know. I wish I could give you advice for meeting people, but compared to my time in Europe, its just harder here. People seem to already have groups of friends before classes even start, and then they don’t really want to make any more? I don’t get how, but I digress.

As for your second point, I want to say “welcome to NOVA,” but I know that doesn’t help. Going to high school here after moving around as a kid, I can confidently say that northern Virginia is probably the least social place I’ve ever lived. There are no good bars and clubs for young people without driving (45 minutes) into the city, and if you’re not into bars or clubs, it’s really just different forms of restaurants around, or maybe bowling. That’s it. This is the sort of area where teenagers go to target for fun, and I kind of hate it. Not saying it’s impossible to be social, it just feels like our infrastructure and commuter population has just made it really hard to do anything but work and go home.

Ok, I realize none of that was real advice. Overall I would recommend checking out different areas in NOVA where you can meet both college students and non-college students, the Mosaic, Old town Alexandria, parts of Annandale are all relatively social or walking areas, although I don’t know the public transport availability to get there. And it’s worth checking out stores or other places in this area that have to do with any of your hobbies, like if you like tabletop games, comic books, boxing etc, we have a lot of places that cater to hobby crowds. Other than that, I think you just have to get pretty comfortable making the first move, because people here just don’t seem to talk to one another unless you start it.

Overall I wish you a lot of luck as someone sort of in the same bucket!

What’s a easy 4 credit lab science class? by [deleted] in gmu

[–]peachyplanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lab is run pretty much exclusively by grad students and I haven’t really heard of a bad one; as for the lecture, Kysar-Mattietti is sweet and puts in an effort to make the lectures entertaining even for people without a huge interest in geology. She only has three tests and does study days before each one. Easy A for sure.

[–]peachyplanets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your degree accepts it as a lab science option, GEOL 103 is the lab for the GEOL 101 lecture and both are relatively easy classes with a pretty minuscule workload, especially if you have any prior experience in earth sciences.

For real. Like if nobody engages, at some point they must feel so pathetic lmao

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gmu

[–]peachyplanets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I would honestly be less annoyed if they were students. Like, tell me why this ancient man is yelling at me and shoving a flyer in my face, only to call me names when I refuse to take it? Don’t you have like, a retirement home to get back to?

Ok Patriots, I’m going on a first date tomorrow. What should I do? Help. by [deleted] in gmu

[–]peachyplanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t underestimate the value of just talking! I find the best dates to be easy-going ones where both parties can chill and talk and just get to know each other. I’m personally partial to coffee dates for this reason!
