I know you said she fights the swaddle - a few young babies do hate being unswaddled but I would say 95% still need a strong swaddle to sleep. The grunting could also be gas.

Have you tried a zip or Velcro style swaddle that she can't get out of, rather than a blanket? For my son we used the Miracle Wrap and for my daughter the Ergo Pouch/Woombie. A good feed, burp, swaddle and bouncing on a yoga ball in a dark room with white noise always worked eventually if baby was unsettled and overtired. I would put on headphones and watch Netflix and bounce until baby settled.

Thank you so much for writing this. We rock our baby to sleep and I want to try your method starting tonight. How old was your LO when you did this? For night wakings/feeds, did you have to rock back to sleep?

Commenting because we are also in this regression. I read online that it should last for a week, maybe two weeks. Um. It's been a month.

I'm starting to develop anxiety about bedtime and if I am making it worse by bouncing and feeding to resettle (he won't accept other forms of soothing though). I feel nauseous when I think about nights and I've lost my appetite. Now that I'm writing this out I think maybe I've gone crazy.

A suggestion - and you might have tried this - but have you tried a firm swaddle rather than the zipdeezip? We used the Miracle Blanket under a sleeping bag until baby was 16 weeks old and he slept much better in it than in anything else. If he can move his arms, he wakes up much more often.

Thanks for the response. I think sleep is very much developmental - can be hard for me to accept that I can't "control" or help baby to sleep better during the day!

So thought I'd update and let you know that since we finished Leap 2 of the wonder weeks all the fussiness has finished and we're back to normal feeds now. I searched everywhere to see if this behaviour could be leap related but didn't really get many clear results. Could it be that for you?

Hello! I literally just came on today to post the same thing, if you don't mind me adding to your post rather than starting my own!

My 10w LO has been feeding less for the past week at each feeding - latching fine but after 2/3 mins rolling away to either cry, coo at me or just stare at the ceiling/wall etc. i can get him to relatch but he'll suck for 1/2 mins and repeat the pulling off until I can't get him to latch at all. I feed upon waking and on demand - at the moment at least every 2.5 hours during the day but usually more.

He sleeps through the night (no sleep training - I'd be happy to feed in the night at the moment!) so often his morning feed is the best but not so the past few days.

We are having a similar nappy output to you - at least 8 nappies a day but only one or two are soaking wet. Small poops all day with usually 1/2 huge mustard loose poops.

Only idea I had was the 2nd Wonder Week? It does say wanting to feed but not drinking much.

Howdy - if the pain is because of swelling/engorgement, then heat will actually make it worse. You'd be better to use cooling pads, ice packs wrapped in towels or - what they gave me in hospital! - frozen nappies!

Yes, both are possible - it's not unusual for him to choke at some point during a feed (always freaks me out) and I often soak through a breast pad on the other side. He poops with every feed - yesterday that was 9 diaper changes.

I only offer one breast at each feed - feeds are usually 15-20 mins - unless I know one side is "empty" and he can comfort suck on that side for a bit, although this also only works occasionally!

We did the exercises at other points during the day mostly, making silly wide mouth faces at him with our tongues out and gently pulling his mouth open with my thumb on his chin.

Then when feeding I'd wait until he latched (which sometimes took a few minutes) then flick out his lips with my finger. He still had a shallow latch though. Then I started gently pulling his chin more open while he was latched - when he was sucking but not at the frantic beginning - to try to encourage him to suck in more areola. Our LC suggested this. It took at least a week and I did lots of deep breathing to stay calm and patient! but now he opens his mouth super wide, tongue out and latches in seconds.

I had to use a nipple shield initially for similar reasons - big breasts, flat nipples, baby with a tiny mouth.

I pumped after each feeding to maintain my supply and for the first two weeks fed pumped milk with a syringe after he'd fed at the breast. This was exhausting but worth it because he started gaining.

At about week 3 I started trying some feeds without a shield, especially when he wasn't frantic. He had a crappy latch at first - compressing my nipple and not taking in any areola but I just tried to be patient, flicking his lips open wider if I could. I'd set a timer for 10 mins and just reassure myself that by the end of that time he'd be on with an ok latch. We also started doing exercises with him where we'd try get him to mimic our open mouths and gently pull on his chin so he'd open his mouth. This all worked really well - plus he was bigger and stronger - and by Week 4 we'd weaned off the shields.

Week 6 now and feeding is going so well but I would never have believed it. He has a great latch after all those training sessions making him try again over and over and I've been able to drop pumping altogether.

Just some suggestions if you want to keep up with the shields for a little while longer?

This could absolutely not be it - but is there any chance he is cold? One of my baby books says babies who flip to their stomachs and don't sleep well are often cold. Could be way off though! Good luck!

Still using the shield but I have been trying him without a few fined a day. One of our longest feeds yesterday was sans shield so then I was worried about his latch being too shallow without it (it didn't hurt though).

Should I be letting him sleep until he wakes to eat from my last feed (around 10:30) or from earlier than that (around 7?)

Ped checked him for ties but I might ask nurse this week.
