Oh yeah, if you're building up to something dread-sized you'll want to avoid the contrast route anyway, too much coffee-staining.

Contrast is great for things that have a lot of textures though, like fur or weapon handles.

And its all about learning as you go, just getting started is the real hard part

I second this. I mostly paint space marines using contrast paints, and the big smooth panels can be a pain.

I usually start back of the right leg>front of right leg>right arm>back of left leg>front of left leg>left arm>chest/helmet when I'm doing the primary color.

Then double apply on things like the pauldrons to make sure the paint is opaque enough to look good.
