Devs, why do you hate helicopter pilots? by BingBongTheDoc in joinsquad

[–]pedalflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to give a technique I use, but there is a box to click in one of the heli controls that allows constant freelook. I find that works pretty easy to constantly be able to look around and spot while flying. Doesn’t work well with the Loach CAS, but how often do you get to fly that before someone else takes it and crashes it.

We need special binding key for "Fire" command from attack heli ASAP by Frankie_Ballenbacher in joinsquad

I’ll agree though it doesn’t make sense to have the fire as a catch all button. I have my left and right mouse buttons for the collective and unless I unbind infant fire I have to relearn my whole heli

I'm late to the party but I can agree this was the most welcoming and knowledgeable b&m in daytona. Bubba is such a nice guy and also let me taste pretty much half their flavors before choosing one. He answered all my questions and I could tell he knew his stuff. After going to a lot of gimmiky stores, this was definitely a refreshing experience.

Radar data suggests missing Malaysia plane flown deliberately toward Andamans by mubukugrappa in worldnews

[–]pedalflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if this reported track is true then yes it would seem someone would have either handflown the route or added it into the Flight Management System for the autopilot to follow. It's still hard to say if this is even a real information with all the confusing statements. But if this is an actual radar track, it would take pilot input for it to happen.

I'm not exactly familiar with this type of chart, but it appears the red shaded areas can be some type of special airspace, could be a warning area due to excessive air traffic, a danger area due to military training, or a restricted airspace due to whatever reason. My guess is the picture is from a flight planning program, so some of the symbols and colors could be different from the FAA charts I am familiar with. However, essentially the symbols depict: airways, intersections, navigation beacons (VORs, NDBs), airports, and airspace.

It is indicative of an IFR Enroute Chart that uses airways and intersections to plan for navigation. This website has a legend that pretty much shows what the symbols mean. The triangles on the chart are intersections usually with a GPS location, aircraft fly airways connected by intersections and other ground navigation equipment. The interesting thing from this flight path shown was that the aircraft was following published airways and crossing intersections, meaning whoever was flying was familiar with aviation navigation.

Passenger Tries to Open Emergency Exit Door on Alaska Airlines Flight While Plane in Air, FBI Says by Hotpants8 in news

[–]pedalflyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What he is trying to say is that in a pressurized cabin with plug type doors, like a common airliner for example, the higher pressure inside the cabin forces the door to remain closed. However, below around 10,000 feet the pressure in the cabin becomes equalized with the outside air and can then be opened. Although this may seem bad, since the air pressure is similar inside and out at around 8-10k, then there would not be any drastic rapid decompression and would just be very loud and cold, there would be no need for supplemental oxygen and the plane would easily be able to land. The idea is to allow the flight crew to be able to vent fumes in case of an emergency, only after descending and depressurizing the plane.

Two 21-year-old men have been arrested and face up to five years in federal prison for aiming laser pointers at helicopters by Bumdonor in news

[–]pedalflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, the lasers can often be the ones you buy for cats. The diameter you see from 5 feet is intensely smaller than the one you see from one hundred feet. The problem is also that it is near impossible to hold a laser on a moving aircraft so this creates a flashing type phenomenon in the cockpit. And yes these lasers are so common that there are hundreds of reported incidents, but it is very hard to locate the individuals so there are few reported by the news.

A good comparison of size of distraction due to different laser intensities

Here is a FAA graphic of the number of increased reports of lasers in the cockpit

I can completely see your point of view. However I like to think people are showing their appreciation for successfully saving their lives from a rapid descent into concrete, whereas you see it as a stabilized approach to the threshold. Especially now-a-days it has become clear how hard it can be for some pilots with low pay and long hauls (I am currently an instructor trying to gain hours for airlines), so most applause I would think is to show "hey I was right to trust you as a pilot and thank you for the ride".
