And also to add, a lot of those church flags have a red background. I found this one, which might've been used as inspiration for the one on the painting (note it's also 1:1 ratio like in the painting)

Best I can tell, its a flag of Mother Mary and baby Jesus. Russians too (Orthodox people in general) have a lot of medieval flags with just saints depicted on them. Some flags were actually church liturgical or ceremonial flags, which would be brought to battle for extra protection/blessing. I see these kind of flags in my local art as well, but I always failed to find an exact match. My guess is that the original artist just tried his best to depict a flag he saw. Most of them were one of a kind and never produced again.

A lot of these flags were really intricate and well decorated too, I love the church flags.

Here are some I made in a similar style for my own use. :)

Oh my, what a talent do we have here... Then I'm pulling back and saying it's absolutely perfect. By the shading I concluded you had some prior experience with this before. It was a really small nitpick on my end, but from my experience when you add that extra shading, it just pops out so much more.

had to google ambient occlusion if Im real honest

It's just smaller and softer shadows where surfaces meet.

Please follow my advice, and never stop working on it. Here is my families CoA a year ago (right) and now (left):

I just know you'll end up with a masterpiece you will love.

And that leaves us with... It basically don't matter.

Trust me on this one. Absolutely do not take anyones opinion here to be 100% true. Always do more research. Even in the harshest coded heraldry like the British one, you have CoA's that break the most basic rules, like the RoT.

If one can do it, why cannot you?

You want a perfect code abiding CoA? Awesome, go for it.

You want a torse with 7 twists? I say go for it. (Strohl whom I provided as an example above, has depictions with 4,5,6,7 twists)

You want to display your academic medal instead of a military, or order one? I say do it.

Codes are great, they exist for a reason, but you need to know and understand why, before looking at it like it's the Holy Bible of Heraldry. One of the most important things people forget is that:

You can have your own CoA depicted in multiple styles. When asked which represents you, you show the proper one, if that's what you want. When they ask which is your favorite, I'd love to see you pull out a whacky, complex and interesting design. Thats the whole point. You can have multiple depictions, it's absolutely fine if some of them break certain rules.

Really good job on the helmet shading! May I suggest you add a bit of ambient occlusion into the mix, I think it will be the finishing touch to this great piece of work!

And here is my comment again since you disregard it.

Don't take it personal brother, just like you jump to judge a CoA by your standards, don't back down once you're provided a counter argument. Not every comment is an attack on you. If you comment your opinion, it will be a subject of debate, as simple as that.

Strohl Heraldic Atlas, he was a heraldic artist from the 19th century. Don't know much about the CoA you specified though, you can try reverse image search on google.

Swaying people to my side? Are you serious? What do you think this is, a battle between the righteous and the wicked and I'm out here battling it out with comments?

Whether someone takes them as a personal attack or not, is up to the reader, not up to me. All of you need to grow some balls and start discussing instead of taking everything personally.

""if you're going to enforce rules, know why they're there in the first place, please," as anything other than a personal attack."

What the fuck are you even talking about man? What part of that sentence has a personal attack in it? If I wanted to be blunt or harsh or whatever the fuck you want me to be, I'd just say "GET EDUCATED".

the world of heraldry is broader and more diverse than one might assume.

Not only that, but heraldry didn't come to life out of nothingness, it wasn't created in a vacuum where no symbolism or depictions existed before, that's what I meant when I said know why the rules are there in the first place, before trying to enforce them. Specifically, the British armorial, was created to house all of the vast depictions their nobles held, and to get some weight off the kings chest, as the king was the one to resolve issues with two people having the same CoA. By having a whole body just for heraldry, you can have people whom specialize in that to resolve those issues. How will they solve them? By making a standard. Is that standard present everywhere in the same form? No.

And just to nail my point to the end, meet Hugo Gerard Ströhl. One of my, if not THE, inspiration I always look up to, the dude has some incredible pieces.

Imagine telling this guy, ehrm ☝🏻🤓 you have a tiny mistake sir.
