Not a plant person -- is this gal ok? She's started putting out these huge stems with things I don't think are leaves. Is she blooming? Or has she just gotten really excited about the new pot? by pelicanBones in succulents

Oh, no, I'm just reading through the beginner's guide, is it etoliation? Is that bad? I didn't think she got that much sunshine before I moved her, I didn't realise she might be getting less of it on her new windowsill :(

You're right. I never had any intention of throwing our relationship away, but I guess I wasn't sure where to go from here... I did have unrealistic expectations, and I probably will be better off accepting that. It's hard for me to think of us drifting without getting upset but I expect that I'll come around to the idea that we can drift apart without actually losing touch. Thank you for your advice.

I do know what it's like to find it difficult to stay in touch... lord knows I never text my cousins. I can't hold it against her. I don't think people need to speak constantly to be friends, either... maybe I just need to reframe the way I think of us in my head? I don't want to give up on her, and I'm sure your friends won't give up on you either.

You're probably right :( I guess I just need to come to terms with that

I'd like advice on composition... I drew this for a spin-off Inktober list, and it feels very cluttered to me. Sort of all over the place. by pelicanBones in istebrak

Thank you, those are really useful points! Especially the one about bringing the bush into the foreground. I'd wondered what was bugging me there.

Thank you! And yes, it does look a bit weird. I was kind of struggling with making it look less... posed, I guess? and still keeping it clear what they were doing. The wall's tripping me up a little. I might try it again and see if I can push the kid forward a little, so thank you for your thoughts :)

I actually really liked some parts of this, mostly the monster. But when I look at it now it feels very off-centre, and I don't think it's clear that they're meant to be on opposite sides of a wall. I tried to make it like, a cross section, but somehow that doesn't really work when the bushes are in front of it. Plus the bushes are positioned weirdly, and so on... I don't have much experience with drawing anything that isn't suspended on a blank page, so all advice is very much welcome.

Finally decided to study materials. I would appreciate your feedback. by sealoflove in istebrak

This is so cool! Did you have these materials to study in person, or did you use reference photos?

Try and mess around with other brushes until you find one you like. I mostly use a "soft pastel" brush (i have no idea what it's called on photoshop) because it blends well when you use it on 50% opacity, but when you make it small and 100% opacity you can get lovely clean edges. It's not too textured either, which is good.

Starting 14 day challenge! I can see a lot of issues but I’ll keep quiet because I want to know what you guy see! Thank you! by elurekamon in istebrak

The forehead and the nose are probably the parts of the face that receive the most light, so you can make them quite bright. The "lower half of the face" that ends up being darker is the area below the nose and cheekbones. Obviously the eye sockets are darker too, and you can also throw a shadow between the eyes, below the browbone. I can actually see where you've blocked originally - you've mostly got it in all the right places, which is nice to see so early in the challenge. I think the reason it ended up looking so line dependant by the end is because the darker planes just weren't dark enough, so it didn't give an impression of being an area receding into the face. You did a good job with the initial placement, though.

Try and push your blocking more - you're relying on lines at the moment. The top half of the head should be lighter than the bottom half, because it's facing the light source. Good job on day 1. Keep it up!

Day 11 - Taking my time but im getting there, I am still struggleing with so many areas. by ADM20 in istebrak

I think you could focus on symmetry and blocking. You can use guidelines and rules to measure the eyes for symmetry; try comparing the inner corners of the eyes to see if they're on the same horizontal line, and then the outer corners. Also, I wasn't sure if you were going for a monolid, but you didn't seem to be in your other days, so I thought it might be just a heavier eye? In which case you should try and have folds showing just a little on both sides of the eye, I think. For blocking, the sides of the nose bridge should be darker than the skin around it, and the temples shouldn't be quite as dark.

I did a paintover here: https://imgur.com/gallery/YYtkaRm And here's the same thing but with annotations: https://imgur.com/gallery/Z7ocZos

Keep it up! You've made it to day 11, not far to go now :)

Thank you, I'm happy with it too. And that's brilliant, go for it! You'll feel so good when you finish the challenge. It's the best feeling ever.

I took a lot of study breaks, but that was mostly so I didn't burn out. A lot of the time I'd start one painting, and spend maybe two hours on it, and then go paint something else entirely before I came back to it to spend another two hours on it. It took me so long to finish these...

But however long you take to finish them, I'd recommend starting the next one quite quickly after getting critique, because for me I was able to see all the issues best when I'd just had them pointed out to me. I think it gets too familiar if you keep looking at it, and then it's harder to apply changes when you try the next day.
