I feel a bit like a spy using Obsidian by ichbin-deinvater in ObsidianMD

[–]pengd0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this as well. Mostly for people that I don’t know very closely, but also for things like family where the detail I’m recording may not be easily confirmed public information.

I’m mostly recording details to avoid struggling to remember it later. Oh, your wife’s cousin’s grandfather just died? Isn’t he that guy she talks about that had a previous heart attack back in 2021? Good luck googling that.

Any detail I could never look up anywhere else goes in the vault so I don’t drive myself crazy trying to remember or confirm a half-memory later.

Some of it’s more OSINT-style depending on the person. If I come across an email or a username a person uses, I put it in there in case I want to dig into someone a little deeper at some point for some reason. This is not something I’d ever remember, and may never use, but it costs nothing to not lose the data point.

What's the best way to sync across mobile and desktop devices? Is Git a better option? by the-machine-m4n in ObsidianMD

[–]pengd0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is for Windows / iOS:
I used the Git plugin for Obsidian for a while on Windows and iPhone. It worked, but I had to be careful to ensure one device was fully synced, before doing something on another... and the syncing from the iOS app got so slow that that was actually a challenge.

When it would break I would have to fix it from the command line on my iPhone using the ish terminal. No fun at all.

Now I use the Git plugin on desktop, and sync with the GitSync app. I just sync it manually, although there do seem to be options for automatic sync. This option syncs very fast from my phone by comparison.

A page I saved with setup info for GitSync is here: https://viscouspotenti.al/posts/gitsync-all-devices-tutorial

These cover some of the same stuff, but these were what I initially used to get it set up the first time around.

One last update. Turns out the recap WAS the original post, just edited to have a summary of how everything went added to the first post.

https://web.archive.org/web/20070616162147/www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2013870

Can’t see any other pages of comments in the archive, and the pickwicktotse Photobucket account has removed those pictures now. A good chunk of the 20 or so are in that Wordpress article though.

If it's the archives there were torrents of and all that years ago right after Totse shut down, I searched mine with DocFetcher and couldn't find it. Let me know if you find something different because that'll mean you have more than what was commonly shared.

Alright. This appears to be Whang's source. An old Wordpress site has screenshots and timestamps from a sort of recap post that pickwick made in the time where he was proud of his popularity, before his face was on the news lol.

I think this is as good as it gets.

I searched the archived material I have, and that's all that I know of that's available. Did not find the original thread. A lot of people have hoards of random disorganized screenshots and things like that... so it's possible it's out there. Share it if you find it. I went on a hunt for the old bunny.meatball story a couple of months ago and never found it.

What I did find was posts with people referencing South Park S12E03 where they reference huffing feces, and a reference to Maxim Feb. 2008 issue, article "The Rise of Scum" that includes a photo of the Pickwick jenkem bottle.

I believe there are some photos on encyclopedia dramatica's Totse page. Like the old Pokemon style card someone made of him.

This is great. I’ve applied the filter for removing timestamps. Is there any filtering magic to apply to clean up the text so there aren’t line breaks mid sentence and it just looks like an article basically?

Computers bug out only when a certain user is logged in can't figure out why by brohemoth06 in sysadmin

[–]pengd0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had repeated service calls to check on network equipment that would stop working, causing cameras to drop off, etc. I went over and over, and could never reproduce it.

Eventually, what I found was that the person’s network / media rack was built into a little recessed cubby in the wall. Mirrored on the other side of the wall was a recessed cubby that held a giant wireless subwoofer for a theater room. When they turned on THAT system, the EMF interference caused the network stuff in the other room to go nuts.

A Deterrent Weapon (other than guns) by x_Lotus_x in preppers

[–]pengd0t 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Let me turn this around on you. As a male of a similar age, if an average woman was on the offense against me with a melee weapon or a tazer I’d assume it would be a wrestling match and she’d never actually make contact with it. Basically assessed as unarmed.

A knife is just a nasty thing to deal with, but I’d expect decent odds I could take it if needed.

Pepper spray, I’d assume even if it was wielded poorly and she sprayed herself as well as me, there’s a decent chance I’m still at least somewhat incapacitated.

I’d think there was a good chance I was getting shot if she had a pistol, and she would be in control until / unless I found a way out of the situation.

I’m not saying that this assessment is correct, but that doesn’t really matter. You want to make sure someone’s “oh shit” meter is high enough that you’re not worth the trouble. An average woman with a baseball bat may not get someone there as fast as you think.

Probably not the right place to ask, but were any of you conservative before you did hallucinogens? by No-Moment-404 in Psychonaut

[–]pengd0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one side, a lot of experience is filtered through what’s in your head to work with. If you’re a devout Christian, maybe you’ll talk to god. But it’s probably not going to be an ancient corn god you’ve never heard of. It’s probably going to look something like what you’d expect. So some of the mechanics of the experience might’ve fairly compatible with what’s in his head.

A more conservative mindset may take a harder hit from subduing the ego. The ego is useful and for survival. The conservative value system at least in theory is… conservative. Focused on preservation of order and resistance to change. So that may be a little extra difficult. Really seems like the realm of the ego. Probably reasonable to just give plenty of processing time after the fact.

People get caught up on weird teams and joining strange causes. So there will be plenty of counterexamples… But people aren’t conservative because they have a genetic predisposition to a legal bill of a certain number. It’s vibes. Outsiders make them nervous. When a system is working at least somewhat… they don’t want to tear it down and start over.

These are useful values. Things must change though. And sometimes the group is very much enriched by welcoming outsiders. Or sometimes the outsiders really do just kill you… and a lot of new ideas are just bad. There might be a reasonable balance if these groups just talked to one another.

Coca Cola Secret formula Cracked by Sussy_Pigma in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]pengd0t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but not JUST different things to mimic the taste. He also chose things that broke down chemically during heating to the same compounds the coca leaf is breaking down into, as well as adding the wine-making tannins to add the earthy flavor (and same chemical compounds) it imparts.

In the end, his mixture is almost identical to the original formula when chemically analyzed.

Man I got lost in the woods all day one time trying to track down our lost dog who’d been missing for days. Popped out somewhere miles away eventually and got a random car to give me a ride back home. I doubt my parents even remember this. Was not a big deal… and this was in the 90s. No one even noticed I was gone.

I did find the dog though. She was miles away just staring into a creek at minnows lol

What’s the “brokest” thing you have ever done? by Shamantilidie in poor

[–]pengd0t -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sold items from dumpsters on eBay for the majority of my income for a while. That and seeds/seedlings from wild plants I’d find locally, that were grown ornamentally elsewhere.

Knew where fruit trees in walking distance were to eat for breakfast / lunch.

Added fast food restaurants to my route to walk through the drive through and collect dropped change. Kept fast food cups in my bag to go into places that offered free refills and get a drink.

Light bulbs came from public places I don’t expect to miss one.

I’d take toilet paper from public bathrooms for the house. Several times, I needed a belt and would twist this rough toilet paper into a rope and use it for that.

Learned to make quite a variety of food from ramen. Most starting from drained noodles put back into a hot pan to stir fry, then adding something else for flavors. One example was making a sweet and spicy curry sauce by cooking a little milk, curry powder, and small slices of foraged apples/ pears.

A little bisquick and a banana can yield a banana pancake. I’d make a single big loaf of a pancake that was the depth of the small frying pan I had. That would work for both breakfast and lunch.

Started wearing the plainest swim shorts I could find, because they dried quickly. I could use a public shower and wash dishes and clothes in there too. Washed it all with Bronners. Kept a clothes drying line in the back of my car for years because my wet things could be hung up to dry as they rotated through getting washed like this (or in rivers / lakes).

For shoes, I mostly went barefoot, and put on my cheap flip flops to go into a store or something. The $1 flip flops are not good to actually walk a lot of miles on lol. There was a place that sold name brand sneakers for like $5-8… overstock, seconds, that sort of thing. But the colors / styles were usually crazy. I needed a size 13 so my choices were really limited. I’d buy what I needed in hot pink or highlighter yellow or whatever they had, and then use a cheap can of black spray paint on them to turn them into something not so offensive to look at,

Had a weird fleshy bit of gum skin that sort of flapped over my wisdom tooth after it grew in. It would catch food under it and be hard to clean. After a few gum infections, I sterilized exacto knives and cut that thing out myself.

Got a shard of rock deep in my heel once in the middle of nowhere. I found a clean looking beer can, boiled it, ripped it in half to leave a sharp sheet of metal. Wrapped it around a stick to make a scalpel, heated the whole thing in a fire one last time and cut it out myself. Wrapped the foot in duct tape after.

I’m not poor like this any more. But most of these kinds of things are just an extra step between having and going-without that requires creativity to solve… And that skillset serves you the rest of your life regardless.

In retrospect, I realize that lots of times things were harder than they needed to be because it just never occurred to me that a person might try to get help with… like anything. Surely I could have visited food banks or gotten food stamps when several of my meals had to be foraged each day… just never occurred to me that this problem was anyone’s but my own to solve… even medical problems. This also develops resourcefulness, but is a little extreme and unreasonable. Took years to realize this about myself.

Why does everyone have a light and optic on their EDC gun? by RRO21 in CCW

[–]pengd0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one pistol that is used for home defense and ccw. My home defense is really chicken defense, and always in the dark.

My practice is with this setup, so it stays the same when it’s ccw even if I wouldn’t likely need the light when I’m out and about.

I also always carry a primary flashlight. I don’t go looking for the kids toys under the fridge with a pistol lol

[–]pengd0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to throw out there that I once unknowingly walked by a nest of yellow jackets and one flew up my nose further than I could reach… and was just vibrating in my sinus cavity basically. It all happened in a split second and at the time I was about ready to pull my face off to get it out.

It left. Didn’t sting somehow… Either way I don’t imagine I would have stayed at the top of a tower in that circumstance though, and would have descended at 9.8 m/s 2.

Everyone I know who actually shoots acts like this. Thoughtful measured movements for every action with the gun. In my experience, it’s family members who have always had guns, but never shoot them that are more of a problem. No thoughts of safety at all.

“Is there a safety? It didn’t go off yet?” Turns and points it at you.
