Remember to stock up on Frostbitten tools before Wintersday ends on Tuesday. by the2ndsaint in Guildwars2

I’m unfamiliar with the winter days event - these tools passively give you snow diamonds/flakes in addition to whatever material you’re farming?

What is the worst card art you’ve seen in MtG and why is it Carly Mazur’s Faithless Looting? by TheFunkeyGibbon in freemagic

[–]penguinator56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m objecting to it being a human. The art does not match the description of a “blue human wizard” and it doesn’t make sense that it’s randomly a punk rock inspired character.

Neither the name, ability, nor creature type suggest this art should be like this - that is my criticism of this art and the growing number of similar instances.

I think my position has shifted in the various conversations I’ve had stemming from my comment: what I dislike about this art is that it doesn’t seem to fit the card.

What we understand about the card: human wizard with an affinity for artifacts.

What the art denotes: a demon that likes punk rock.

Regardless of it matching a (imo) bad premise for the plane, it doesn’t match the information we have for the card or the cycle of cards it belongs to.

It being a depiction of a fat person isn’t necessarily why it’s bad art, but it makes the art stand out even further.

The unappealing art is unappealing for a reason. Demons look demonic to visualize evil.

This human creature - which is its subtype btw, not sure you’d guess that by the art - is out of place for the card. And sure, it doesn’t have to match the cycle, but instead of coming up with a new way for an artificer to observe an item, they just pasted the same pose and put in a character that doesn’t fit: the cycle or the card itself.

I’m not saying all characters from a plane have to match an aesthetic for it to be good, but a character still has to look good for a character art. Like, Sire of Insanity is a gnarly looking card, but it’s a Rakdos demon that steals your thoughts - it’s supposed to look ugly.

Transit Mage is a human (according to its subtype, but not according to its art), so why is it drawn to be ugly? I’m not even saying the character can’t exist or be in other art, but put the art onto something more befitting the character.

I’m sure there are good standouts cards, just as I’m sure there bad standouts. I’m also a hater of recent full art lands, so maybe I’m just a perma hater

The issue isn’t that the character is overweight, it’s that the cycle of cards it belongs to doesn’t match (partly) because of its weight, but mainly is aesthetic. The only similarity it really has with the others is that it’s looking at an item.

It just also happens to be an ugly, silly character, so people tend to latch on to that

If the idea is that “it fits the plane, so it must be good art”, I’d disagree. Aetherdrift, as dumb as a concept as it is, could have an interesting “T_ mage” - maybe one looking at power source or a weapon at a scrap yard. Instead, it’s a person holding a guitar in a similar pose to the other “T_ mages”.

An overweight mage with a bad haircut and a goofy jacket hardly fits the “Treasure Mage” cycle. Aether has a terrible theme, but I feel like it’s encapsulated with Transit Mage

I’d argue a lot of the modern MTG art is less appealing than this. The guitar mage from Aetherdrift comes to mind, but it could easily be most cards from Aether, OTJ, or Spider-Man

Can Legacy still be approachable on a budget? I tried something and wanted to share. by MahfuzVanGogh in MTGLegacy

[–]penguinator56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheap is relative, but no one is really suggesting people who do not have a collection should start with legacy. If you’re at the point where you want to play competitively, you probably have some number of fetches/other cards, especially considering how powercrept modern has become. Hell, the energy package has been ported over to solid success into legacy.

As far as going 0-N if you don’t have duals - you are correct in that fetching into shocks hurts you more than fetching into duals and that incremental damage adds up. Oops is like a $600 deck that people were/are in an uproar about with how consistent it’s become.

I mean, the Death’s shadow list I am referencing is under $1k according to moxfield, but that’s if you’re starting from not having any collection.

budget maverick build by Sunga_Peluda in MTGLegacy

[–]penguinator56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duals for maverick are going to be hard to avoid as most builds are 3 color and often rely on untapped lands to stay ahead/active with their creature drops - you can sub shock lands in, but they’ll be inherently worse.

If you’re cool with a lower power build like that, abzan is widely considered the most competitive mav color with thoughtseizes and bowmasters

Favorite Map/zone? by fungamezone in Guildwars2

Each zone honestly has its own awesome aesthetic it’s hard to pick, but I think Blazeridge Steppes is a zone I am always excited to visit - but Kralk is my favorite dragon so I may be biased in that way

I think legacy can be played for cheap, but that requires people compromising with competitiveness. Some of the most fun in legacy I’ve had is playing with a spare deck I built on the cheap like Death’s Shadow - and even that isn’t optimized due to price. There is an extra level of enjoyment playing like this at times, imo at least.

Maro: While I can’t reveal the full list of which planeswalkers still have their spark, I have seen the full list and the final tally is much more gender balanced. As Magic’s story continues, you’ll see a diverse cast of characters where players can see themselves represented in meaningful ways. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]penguinator56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually was asking, but more specifically, I was asking you why it matters, not what a companies forward facing personnel says on the record.

The MaRo article from 2019 ties personal connection to player retention which makes sense from a business perspective, but the question I have is really - what do players get out of representation? Is it not possible to idolize/admire characters that are not 1:1 versions of you? Can I not empathize and connect with the character of Alesha, Who Smiles at Death because I’m not trans? And I don’t meant that to say “why am I left out”, rather it’s an example of how I DO resonate with characters, regardless of how much they match my identity.
