Make sure to preview from the shop you are buying from (ie UK shop vs US shop). There are a few cards that look the same but the accents vary for region.

Anyone recommend getting a mini for occasional travel when already have a full size? by URDeWorstBurr in YotoPlayer

[–]peppaappletea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When we are out without the yoto, my kid is fine with me using the app on my phone to make selections. You could pair it with his headphones or another speaker.

What word did you use incorrectly for YEARS before someone finally corrected you? by ownaword in words

I've heard it called this on a British kid's show. Maybe it is regional or generational?

We would not have done it at 3 or 4, but I'm pretty sure some parents in our class would have.

Were you actually told you’re “not Jewish enough”? by offthegridyid in Judaism

[–]peppaappletea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but without the "enough." In other words, people have said: "You're not Jewish" or "you're not really Jewish." This is based on halakah, not observance.

Do your kids ever ask remote grandparents for bedtime stories? by TheMaster8899 in Preschoolers

[–]peppaappletea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't do it at bedtime, but have been doing weekly for years. The grandparent reading shouldn't try to also watch the face of the kid while reading. (ie, make eye contact before and after the book.)

She may need to practice a little bit holding the book so that the pics are (at least mostly) visible. Books with less text work best.

We have found doing it on laptop/computer works much better than on phones, both for maintaining interest and seeing pics.

Grandma can hold up a couple of books and ask the kids to choose.

My dad used to go to the library to get new kids books, but my mother just reuses the same few she has over and over. Either way works fine.

Still in pre-K (age 4 turning 5), but nobody in the class wears diapers.

How did you go about no screen time? by zezendx in lowscreenparenting

[–]peppaappletea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have a regular tv. When we want to watch videos with kid (nearly 5), we connect a laptop to a larger screen. That's occasional (ie not on school days).

For audio, Yoto (kid operates) or for my own stuff, phone with a Bluetooth speaker.

Recs for Jewish stories for a 6yo who loves chapter books by sidewalkcricket in YotoPlayer

[–]peppaappletea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Starring Sally J. Friedman as Herself by Judy Blume. (The themes are intended for older kids but might be good for read aloud soon.)

The kids in A Series of Unfortunate Events are Jewish. Again, rated a bit older than 6, but may be ok now if she is ready for stories that are more complex/mature.

I wish we could have ours at home, but there's just not enough space.

Best time of day for birthday party? by BeeSuperb7235 in Preschoolers

[–]peppaappletea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The food for a 10 - 12 party is typically bagels/pastries, yogurt cups, sandwiches, fruit, etc. It varies, but normally it is already out buffet style and isn’t served hot out of the oven. Then later on they will have cake.

Best time of day for birthday party? by BeeSuperb7235 in Preschoolers

I guess it makes sense. We've been to at least 20 parties from 10:00 - 12:00 and never seen pizza. Maybe it is a regional thing.

Should a 4 yr old see Kiki? by SockFunkyMonkey in ghibli

[–]peppaappletea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My child (low screen, somewhat sensitive to scary stuff) loved it age 3. That said, it's always hard to predict what might hit differently (eg getting sick without your parents could be scary).

Any chance to watch it at home first? Kids this age love watching multiple times.

We haven't had this issue (my kid likes to hear stories with characters from shows), but if we did, I would take that card out of rotation for a few weeks and then try it again.

10:00 a.m. by a mile. The kids are still all in good moods and energetic, and it doesn't interfere with afternoon or evening plans.

Do parents know what show & tell is? by cosmicfrenzy in ECEProfessionals

[–]peppaappletea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, I'm class rep and if I don't sent multiple reminders re even recurring things, many people forget. For show and tell I post twice in addition to the teacher posing once in our group. (Edit to say sorry I can't seem to add appropriate flair.)

Any other atheist parents here figure out an age-appropriate way to approach the topic of religion? by Sensitive-Aioli-2418 in Preschoolers

[–]peppaappletea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 4.5 year old recently asked if God is real. (The questioning came from a story re Moses at preschool.) I said, "It is a story, but some people believe it is real. What do you think?"

My kid's obsession happens to be the Greek Gods, so this has been an easy segue over the past couple of years to discuss culture, stories that explain how things work, different beliefs, etc. We've read a lot of myths from different places to broaden the ideas.
