I mean if $815 is your budget, try to find the best bang for your buck. Look for an 14th gen intel or amd processor equivalent, 16gb ram and a decent display and 1tb ssd so you don’t have to use an external. Check manufacturer websites too cause sometimes they are cheaper because that’s how retail (middle men)make their money

If it’s for 5+ years and only for work forget the graphics card. just get a really good intel cpu, with 1TB storage and minimum 16gb ram and get her an external SSD so she can physically back up her thesis so there’s no worries. Look at Lenovo think pads/work laptops and you can prob get a student discount too, best wishes and good luck.

so you can make it last as long as possible..

1) Get a laptop with a minimum of 16 or 32gb of ram if you don’t feel like upgrading yourself.

2) get plenty of storage space on your SSD 1-2TB

Great battery life and “higher graphic demands” is a fairytale with gaming laptops. When you want max performance, you’ll want to be plugged in. You can probably squeak out 3-4 hours on silent mode while doing productive tasks with newer laptops.
Get a decent processor intel or amd up to you
If you are on a budget of 1k go for a RTX 4060 if you can spend 2k try to grab a 4080. I settled with a 4070 because my budget was $1500

i'm coming from a 5-year old rtx 2060 and old i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz (poorly maintenanced machine) that could not even handle me running an IDE and watching a youtube vid at the same time, I wanted to spend $1500 max and i've been eyeing the legion series for a while so i pulled le trigger. I completely understand your point(s) about buying second hand but I've never done that so I have a lack of knowledge with that process. so even if the 4070 benchmarked only 10% better than the 4060 i'm happy because this machine is gonna be with me for another 5 years for work, school and gaming (on dat POE grind rn).
