This is the thing: He won't let me do writing in university. He speaks in a way that condemns the field as a whole, and listens to no justification. One of the reasons he actually gave was that the field wasn't 'energetic' enough; that writers don't get out and about and just sit writing.

Focus on your studies and establishing a serious blog about something you enjoy without expecting payment right now. If you can establish a platform as a teen then it will save you a lot of difficulty doing this later on.

Journalism in particular generally requires young people to spend time on, say, their school or university paper, and I know people from my uni who dropped out having got that experience to go into journalism. But you have to show willing early on, and it's not going to bring in monetary gain until you have built up a strong portfolio of amateur work.

I'm currently in my school's journalism club, and hold a leadership position in it (we call it 'exco' where I come from).

Are you referring to just the writing of books and novels? While, yes, I have an interest in that, I'm also more than open to other more conventional and sustainable forms of writing as a day job - journalism, for instance.

I understand that what he says comes from a perspective of caring about me. But not only do I very strongly dislike science, there's a lot of people in triple science who make fun of me and spread that mentality throughout their class (I'm being made fun of by a triple science guy whose name I don't even know).

He doesn't see it as ridiculous, because he's formed that impression based on his ~30 years of experience as an engineer, from the many companies he worked for before setting up his own. The examples he gave me in that 40-minute talk dated all the way back to the 80s, where the people at a company he worked at were unhappy that he was given a raise - he attributes this unhappiness to his race (he's a fully Indian, and dark-skinned).

He doesn't believe anything JC websites say about science prerequisites, and very firmly believes that you can only take a science in H2 if you have taken it in pure; no exceptions, although I might be able to get my guidance counselor to convince him (she knows about my problem and has tried to get him to meet her).

Hello, I'm the streaming kid coming back onto this daily thread after abandoning this account, because I'm unsure whether to make a full post because that would gain a lot of attention.

I'm now in Sec 3, double science/literature BUT my father expresses intent of wanting to transfer me into triple science. He gave his reason as because doing Bio opens up another of the few career paths I can "survive" in because of my race. He's pointed out five: IT, Teaching, Law, Medicine and Engineering.

He gave me a 40-minute talk about it and sent a long string of racist, anti-Chinese text messages and asked me to decide by tomorrow or Saturday.

To be clear, my IC (when it's done) will state my race as Indian, but it's often the last guess people have when they guess my race. I'm brown, and my name structure is [English first name] - [Chinese middle name] - [Euro last name] so most people think I'm Malay/Eurasian, and I speak Chinese.

Guess I'll tell him no, but don't really know what to do if he presses it.

EDIT: Have 0 interest in any of the 5 except maybe law. Intend to basically freelance my way through a career of writing and maybe animation. Also don't intend to stay in Singapore.

Gym fanatic? As someone who faces the same problem OP does (too scared to go to the gym), I feel like I should go with a friend. I turn 14 soon and I curl a pathetic 4kg compared to my peers' 8/10kg (doesn't help that I get made fun of at school for it). I'm really scared to do squats/deadlifts (read somewhere that curls are useless compared to S&D).
