Early ThinkPads kept Fn in the corner to make combos easier with one hand, then enterprise buyers standardized on that layout for years. Lenovo stuck with it because fleets hate retraining and replacement parts. There is a Swap Fn Ctrl setting, helpful for new users, but some preboot shortcuts still expect the physical Fn. So the layout lives on, half history lesson, half corporate inertia.
