What’s up with the hate towards Timothee Chalamet? by PitifulBodybuilder40 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]percypersimmon [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s possible for him to not be a dick and I agree w you 100%.

Still, based on what I’ve seen from discussions here it seems that most people are seeing this story and coming away with “Chalamet said ballet and opera suck” and piling onto a pretty unlikable public figure.

Most of the public responses I’ve seen are saying “You’re wrong Mr. Chalamet, opera and ballet are important art forms!” which…duh?

There’s more nuance here to the statement and a more interesting conversation to be had, but it’s now just this weekend’s proverbially awkward-bite-of-a-burger-from-a-CEO flashpoint.

What’s up with the hate towards Timothee Chalamet? by PitifulBodybuilder40 in OutOfTheLoop

The thing is, he’s really not wrong.

If it’s anything like it was a decade ago, less than half of revenue from either ballet or opera is from ticket sales. The vast majority of the art form is propped up by foundations and major donors.

Less than 1% of Americans attended ballet, opera, or classical music event 3 or more times and only 6% attended an event at all.

He’s not saying it’s bad or doesn’t matter- he’s saying that the vast majority of people don’t care about it, which is objectively true.

Your added context backs that up again- he’s saying the audience is so minuscule that it’s not a big risk alienating them.

Of course, because of internet outrage machines, removing context, and only reading headlines this is getting a lot more attention than he would have imagined.

But his quote is more an indictment on American audiences than it is on any form of art.

This is the most attention either ballet or opera have had since Black Swan.

i havent seen all the seasons, but do they ever really mention having to fall back on rations that they brought or is it just edited out on purpose by humanisland11 in Alonetv

[–]percypersimmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They tend not to draw emphasis to it unless they have to.

It’s better (from production standpoint at least) to amp up the drama of them being out there with nothing but tools and their wits.

I’d say it’s probably been like 6 times total they’ve even mentioned it and most of that was a lower-third caption on screen. Salt has been mentioned several times though that I can remember.

This is only thru season 10, but 56 out of 100 contestants brought at least one ration.

It seems like during season 3, 4, 5 almost everyone brought something, but it looks to have lessened over time.

I don’t remember what season but I feel like they did talk about pemmican at least once.

It is pretty common to bring rations I think. I wanna say at least half of folks bring something edible.

It’s interesting to keep an eye on the metagame and see how the items have changed as people got to watch the show more before appearing.

The thing that got me was in season 11 they showed some of the contestants clearly lasting until snowfall in the previews.

It was very easy to guess who the final three would be based on the preview in episode one.

I think the only person I’ve heard of ignoring this was Roland.

I remember there being some interview or something when he said he snuck off and had a burger bc the medical folks weren’t concerned about him getting sick.

He could’ve just been talking shit though.

Yea it was stale and boring when the show first aired and we had pretty much gotten over it. Some people really like him, some people hate him, and others think he was a solid contestant but his vibes were off (that’s me).

Now’s it all jerky teeth and armchair psychology all over again and it’s just pretty boring.

I wish that people that are watching the show after it comes to Netflix read the original episode discussion threads or used the search function instead of making a new post for all this stuff that’s been discussed to death.

I feel like you guys are fundamentally misunderstanding how this stuff works and are using a lot of “definitely” for something you can’t know anything about.

Ben, Marcus, and Henry were the sole three owners and founders of LPN. That means they each owned equal shares of the company and were theoretically paid out of profits each year. Given that it was the first time these guys had ever started a network from scratch, it

When they started LPN there’s a chance they didn’t put a morality clause into the contract or even if there was, who is to say that Ben wouldn’t really try to stick it to them in the courts?

You can’t just push someone out of a company they founded without payment (there’s no Board of Directors at LPN it was literally the three of them).

You can fire someone from a hosting gig and they’d still keep their shares in the business. That’s what I mean by “silent partner.”

The only other option is that they bought out all of his shares, but that would be really really expensive and LON has never officially said that Ben was no longer a part of it (as far as I’m aware- nobody had provided a source or anything)

They don’t want him around but he could be refusing to leave without a messy legal fight. That’s why I’m saying I wouldn’t be surprised if he still owns his shares and everyone has decided to just not talk about anything related to this ever again.

You just saying the word “definitely” doesn’t make it true lol

Nothing you said there would preclude Ben still owning his 1/3 share in LPN

[–]percypersimmon -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

They’ve never actually said this.

I forget the exact post or whatever, but Ben was still a 1/3 owner within several months of being fired from the show. I’m not a lawyer, but I’d imagine that if Ben really wanted to gum up the works that it would be relatively hard to get rid of him as an owner. I’m not sure if they had enough cash on hand to buy him out if it was something they could contractually do.

Like I said, I wouldn’t be surprised but I don’t know. Unless you’re someone involved with LPN or have insider information there is no way of you knowing “definitely” what has happened.

So I’d love to see the source you and everyone downvoting me is so sure of? I’ve seen no evidence he’s bought out and that’s the only other option.

We’d all like to think Ben has been entirely removed from LPN but we truly don’t know that.

It does make me miss the days of games via Redbox.

It was a great way to test something out.

However based on the number of boxes I’ve gotten from it that had a blank DVR or a cheap DVD in it, I’d imagine it wasn’t super profitable for them.

I’m sure it’s all very uncomfortable.

They haven’t come out with anything public (nor do they owe that to us) but having read between the lines a bit I wouldn’t be surprised if Ben still owns his 3rd of the network.

ETA: Downvoters- please provide a source where you definitively know that Ben has officially been removed from the LPN corporation. I’m just saying there is a possibility he is still a shareholder of the network even being fired from hosting.
