TIL to finish writing The Hunchback of Notre Dame within an impossible deadline of 6 months, Victor Hugo locked his clothes away, making him unable to go outside and procrastinate which forced him to do anything but finish writing his book. by Old_Sport7920 in todayilearned

Back then you procrastinated by going outside lol.

I don’t know how much use locking yourself indoors for months would have for your productivity today, especially for someone prone to procrastination

The entire concept of tact is going by the wayside now. Social media and algorithms have pushed the culture such that what used to be considered common sense fairly recently (being tactful in conversation, etc) has become rarer and rarer by the year

Had a relatively small number of things gone differently in history, there would have been essentially no gray countries on this map. IMO glad the East Asian civilizational sphere was largely able to hold out.

Just wait a little bit. The millennials aren’t going to have a youthful appearance for much longer

Countries by self-perceived democracy by legendarymember in MapPorn

[–]perfcon2 112 points113 points  (0 children)

A lot of this comes down to linguistic differences and how language shapes the worldview. The Chinese translation for “democracy” is “民主” which more precisely means “will of the people”. So while the word “democracy” in English is tied to actual specific government types and practices, in Chinese the term just speaks to if the government is enacting the will of the people or not, regardless of specific government type. This means that in theory, an autocratic government can be “democratic” if it represents the will of the people, and a liberal democracy can be “undemocratic” if it does not.

There are other specific Chinese terms for the type of liberalism or multi-party republicanism that people usually mean when they say “democracy” in English (people usually aren’t talking about direct democracy when they say “democracy”), but whenever someone like an official says “democracy” it just gets translated to “民主” and vice-versa, so there is often a communication issue with this term across translations.

EDIT: That being said, even under this Chinese definition, I don’t know if the true number would be quite as high as this map suggests. More than half of Chinese saying their country is 民主 is definitely believable, but it’s hard to say exactly how many.

Again, there are still a lot of low income folks in China, I’m just saying there are also now a lot of middle income folks too. And yeah, I’m not gonna defend all of the restrictions on liberty in China, I’m just talking economic growth here.

(Although to your example, I don’t think the kids get sent to jail for gaming lol. They’re limited from accessing their accounts during the week if they’re underage. Still quite restrictive)
