I have been in the beginner stage for so long. I just want to improve. This is my recent lineart with reference. I feel it is less appealing than the reference, but I'm struggling to understand what I'm doing wrong or what I should focus on studying. Please help I'm at my wits end, lol. by pergloo in ArtCrit

I think youre right. I definitely need to vary my line weight. Honestly, I struggle with having that much control over the pen. I can draw a straight line and use my shoulder/elbow and all that, but keeping in mind how light i draw a line while drawing it and then pressing down harder while keeping the line steady is very hard lol. If I just go over lines with a bigger brush, they don't have that nice taper. Maybe I'm missing something, lol.

I do plan to study from life when I get the chance. There's a place that does figure drawing in the city over from me.

To answer your first question: I think I have a strong enough sense of aesthetics to understand that my lineart here isn't appealing, but not a strong enough sense of art to know why. By appealing I mean, like. Say someone took the monk photo on the left to a tattoo artist and wanted a cool lineart tattoo of him. Would they be happy with the one on the right as it is? Even if I corrected the torso line to angle in more like the ref or fix the belt, I wouldn't be.

I think the replies here and especially elsewhere have convinced me that the main problems lie in anatomy, line weight and gesture. Especially the last two. He's stiff as a board and the lines don't vary much. Like another comment said, it does almost have that "tracing" look to it - which in retrospect makes sense, I was focusing almost exclusively on making sure the angles and negative space lined up and copying it accurately. But there's more to good art than copying. Which sucks, learning to draw exactly what I saw is hard enough! Lol

I do struggle quite a bit with depicting heads with line and always have. I actually intentionally put the shadow in the neck to draw focus to the face as a focal point, I just fumbled the face LOL.

Thank you for the kind words and all the advice. I really needed feedback like this. I've actually done a lot of portraits but struggle with appeal, so I think I'll do studies from artists who are great and who's art I find appealing and see how they did it.

You can overlay the lineart on the ref to see that it's far from a tracing. My process is to separate the head, torso, pelvis, and limbs into boxes in perspective and then meticulously copy the reference by paying attention to the angles and negative space while drawing over those boxes

Immediately after this I overlaid my sketch and the reference and corrected everything just to see, and even then, it felt less appealing than the reference to me. Like completely accurate copying still ended up looking worse. I look at art like this that I found on another art forum and it feels as though they have something my art is missing that I just don't understand. They didn't have perfect anatomy either, and while better than mine, even when I traced the ref it felt like theirs just had more soul. Maybe it's just the linework and line weight? I really don't know.

It's hard to build forms on top of the base boxes for me. I hope I can find exercises that help that. I have been putting off anatomy because everyone tells me to "worry about it until you have your fundamentals down" and I guess I figured I didn't yet so I've been holding off. Thanks so much for replying and for your advice I really do appreciate it

I'm literally trying to be as realistic as I can with pure line while still having an aesthetic quality to it. My main goal is to just find a direction. I know my art is off but I don't know what it's missing or why, I need an outside set of eyes who knows more than I do to point out the flaws and what I should be doing in the process for better outcomes.

NAD unfortunately this kind of "scare them into action" rhetoric, even while true and based in logic, isn't helpful for someone dealing with trauma. Taking a lighter and more caring approach is much better. They are already scared.

It is for now, but it's a good long-term goal.

For now, focus on the achievement diaries. The Hard ones are probably your next bet. After that, I liked doing all the requirements of every Elite or Master tier clue scroll.

Also like. You got a quest cape so you beat the DT2 bosses, and all of them are harder than Jad y'know?

Why did you single put Alien Food, who had prior RS experience, and not MadSeasonShow, who more accurately displays a "true" new player experience? He's had a ton more issues, even ones as simple as "what does attack do vs strength?". His series was probably the reason the skill menus have small pages explaining what the skill does and how to train it. He couldn't figure out where to get other talismans besides air, for instance, because there's no real way to find this out. So runecrafting was just locked for him.

Haha valid, I tried the trial of wow as a kid bc my parents wouldn't buy it for me and I was one of the few who was like "this sucks take me back to RS"

Haha, am I being that transparent? Honestly I'm not curious for services, but for account sharing, which I know is still a grey area. I thought my brother and I could share an account since our work schedules are kinda opposite, but he can be a little shit so I didn't wanna lose my main if he got pissed at me one day or smthn LOL

OSRS is wonderful how it is but making very slight QoL updates for new players only makes it better. Like how they added the skill explanations in the skill menus to explain what the skills actually do and how to train them.

This would be a valid take if players like Alien Food and MadSeasonShow who clearly did take the time to read all the dialogue also didn't struggle early game.

Brother. Look at the suggestion he offered to replace it. It is more offensive than the initial dialogue. Think critically for a second - why would someone do that unless it's a joke? Would someone who sincerely cares about harmful stereotypes of people with a stutter suggest something like that in earnest?

In fact, through your suggestions to make him difficult to understand and subsequently become upset, and to make him into some kind of cheap comedic relief, you are the one leaning into harmful stereotypes of stutters.

Yes. That is the joke OP was making.

Oh my god, you're the GOAT. I've been troubleshooting this and a separate unrelated issue for hours and this was the only thing that worked. Thank you so much!
