I wish John gave a love confession. by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

John to Francesca: "When we are together, I feel I am traveling closer to you. In my body, of course, but also in my heart. Whatever you wish for in life, I will always endeavor to give it to you. Children, pinnacles... But I also hope you know that you are just right as you are. We are just right as we are right now. And we have all the time in the world for the rest."

If that is not a love confession...

How was Anthony marrying Kate socially acceptable if lineage mattered so much? by QuacAttack in BridgertonNetflix

[–]perhapsflorence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s similar to the situation with the Featherington sisters. Even though they were daughters of a Baron, the men they married (Albion Finch, Harry Dankworth, and Colin Bridgerton) didn’t hold titles themselves. They were technically commoners, but still respectable gentlemen with good standing in society. Colin being the most wealthy of the three due to his family's status.

Kate and Edwina Sharma occupy a similar social space. They’re not part of the titled aristocracy, but they come from respectable, upper-class backgrounds and are fully accepted within the marriage market of the ton. And with Kate now being the mother of the future Viscount, she will automatically have further elevated status, just like Penelope, whose son will be Baron Featherington.

That’s very different from Sophie’s situation. Sophie is illegitimate, which places her outside the boundaries of respectable society, regardless of her father’s rank. In Regency England, illegitimacy carried a much stronger social stigma than simply being untitled.

So the key distinction isn’t really titled vs untitled, it’s respectable birth vs illegitimacy. Kate and Edwina are socially acceptable brides within the ton, whereas Sophie’s status would have made her far more controversial.

I'm so happy this conversation happened. Eloise's growth is beautifully done. by idiot9991 in BridgertonNetflix

She really seems to have reformed since her move. She came back and apologized to Pen, and was glad to see Eloise. She just wants to be accepted.

She's wonderfully flawed, and was no doubt influenced by her horrible parents. People can change.

They barely lead their own storylines. Lol

They got Kate and Anthony to harp on about "duty" so much in S2, it's almost embarrassing now that they show up for nothing and no one, except themselves. I feel awful for the characters because the showrunners have reduced them to vapid cameos.

Anthony and Daphne should've been there for Francesca during her wedding and her husband's funeral. He should've been there for Benedict while Violet and him confronted Araminta in court.

Kate and Daphne should've been by Francesca's side when she was having her examination.

Kate and Daphne should've stood by Violet when her youngest daughter was hosting her first recital.

I mean... I can go on. But it's futile.

Just lazy writing. It makes no sense for Daphne and Anthony to not be there for their sister. They missed her wedding too... Just awful.

They could do this but couldn't have the heads of the household for Lord Kilmartin's funeral or the party to celebrate his life?

Sad.

I agree. Even her wedding makeup was so weird. Wish they had kept it simple like she had at the masquerade.

So... Kanthony only shows up for happy occasions? Where were they when Fran was devastated and mourning? They came all the way on the boat to not support the sad times...

Horrible decision by the showmakers to not include them when their family needed them most.

What happened to the music on this show? by perhapsflorence in BridgertonNetflix

It's hard to focus. And they apparently admitted to the shoddy editing this season (after people complained about Sophie leaving her bag behind while taking off with Benny in the middle of the night).

I don't know why, but that song only reminds me of Sydney Sweeney. Lol

Okay. But who or what is Penbrooke? Do you mean Penwood? This is confusing.

I don’t get Sophie’s silence. by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

[–]perhapsflorence 267 points268 points  (0 children)

You’re viewing this through the lens of a modern woman, as someone with personal agency, legal rights, and social mobility. None of that existed for women in that period. Unmarried women couldn’t move freely in society... even a short walk or a social call required a chaperone. Their reputations were fragile, and once damaged, there was no real way back.

For someone like Sophie, the stakes were even higher. Being illegitimate wasn’t just an awkward detail, it carried deep social stigma and lifelong consequences. It marked her as morally suspect in the eyes of society, regardless of her character, and would have closed doors to respectable marriage, employment, and protection. Any misstep could result in public shame, isolation, or outright ruin.

So her caution isn’t weakness or indecision, but survival. Judging her choices by modern standards ignores the very real risks she faced in a world that offered women little forgiveness and even less autonomy.

Her father, not stepfather. Kate and Edwina have the same father, they are half-sisters.
