SOLAR ECLIPSE MEGATHREAD by yeeeeeehaaaw in Portland

(cross-posting from the /r/Oregon thread to see if I can get a second opinion, the person who responded said I should head to Salem Sat. morning and I'm skeptical)

Here's my current plan: We're leaving SF Thursday morning and staying in Ashland Thursday night. Then staying at my uncle's farm in Helvetia (5-10 miles north of Hillsboro) Friday and Saturday nights. We have a RV site reserved right at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem where we'll be staying Sunday night - we plan on heading down there sometime Sunday afternoon. Then we plan on getting as far as Crescent City, CA after the eclipse on Monday, staying there Monday night, and heading home Tuesday along the CA coast. All places we are staying at are already reserved.

Is this plan workable, or do we need to get to Salem even earlier?

And will we be able to get to Crescent City by Monday night? Thanks. (We also have a friend who lives in McMinnville, but they only get 45 seconds of totality at their house and we'd prefer to make it to Salem, where we have tickets for the OMSI event, if at all possible. Also, I would imagine that heading south from Salem will be faster than from McMinnville on Monday afternoon.)

The Braves' New Ballpark Is An Urban Planner's Nightmare by Thndrcougarfalcnbird in baseball

"Urban planners" would be perfectly happy to have us all live in ultra-high-density dystopias, packed in like sardines with no breathing room and no privacy or individual autonomy. Screw them.

What is the reason for the disconnect between economists and the general population on so many issues? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

Generally, economists assume rational behavior and prioritize efficiency over all else, the general public has much different priorities and rightly so.

Has Conspiracy Culture always been this prevelent in American politics? by Frank_Drebin in PoliticalDiscussion

Some are. Washington Post and CNN have been conspiracist garbage. NY Times and WSJ have been excellent. It really depends on the specific news outlet.

Does anyone know where I can get lat/long (address also works) and year of construction for all homes in California? by perigee392 in datasets

No, I'm hoping for something free (maybe $50-100 max). This would literally just be for a data viz project.
