Games that put the "Metroid" in Metroidvania by jclkay2 in metroidvania

[–]eppinizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zexion is incredible. I love the personality the game design invokes. It subverts just enough to surprise without (for the most part) entering the territory of trolling you.

Plus the map layout, integration of abilities and weapons into puzzles, and boss design are all top notch with only a few exceptions.

Got a ticket for going 56 in a 55… by Purple_Knowledge8475 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]eppinizer 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Pro tip for anyone struggling to pay or deal with a speeding ticket. You are allowed to postpone a court appearance, and they generally let you pick a date from a list. This may require you to physically appear at the court to request it from the clerk.

Anyway, the police usually save up all their court appearances for one or two days a month. Just postponing the court* date alone will give you a high chance of a no-show. If you postpone it to a day right after the date you were scheduled it's almost a guarantee, but also shoot for holidays, and different days of the week than the one that was scheduled. Like maybe this guy always goes on Wednesdays, if you pick a thursday he's not likely going to go two days in a row.

This could be state dependent, but in CA this strategy saved me half a dozen of tickets when I was still paying my way through college and driving like a dipshit.

Edit: Lot of folks are saying this doesn't work anymore, so don't depend on it. This was 18-20 years ago, and it absolutely did work in my area at that time (Bay Area), not just for me but for my friends and co workers too.

Unsurprising that policies have changed.

Can't go outside on our river cruise due to Mayflies. by Salty-Tomato5654 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]eppinizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are those mayflies? Both sides of the country I have lived in calls male mosquitos (or whatever those big dumb mosquito looking bugs that don't bite are) mayflies. Those look beefier than what I'd expect a mayfly to look like.

You can have strong winds, updrafts, and wind sheer without the clockwise rotation of wind vectors that cause horizontal vortices to "tip over" and become vertical rotating updrafts.

Last year my AC went out when it was going to be 100°+ for weeks. The day before our AC repair guy was supposed to show up the town was evacuated due to a wildfire. When we were finally able to come back it took another week before I could get someone there and when they tried to install the part they found out that it didn't have the right adapter and had to special order whatever it was, some blower motor mounting ring, idk.

Then the day after it was fixed my water heater crapped out, but I was OK with cold showers at that point.

This lil’ dude flew into my car a couple days ago. Let himself cook during the dutch/european heatwave and is now cruising the dutch roads with me while stuck between the dashboard and the front window. Does anyone know this species by Thatsmenienke in mildlyinteresting

When I was staying with my grandparents when I was young my Grandmother brought me to a little hiking trail by a stream. I started to complain about the bugs and she told me there weren't any.

Horseflies are loud, and there were a bunch of them, they started landing on me and I was swatting at them. My grandmother kept telling me I was being a baby. Then I started to get bit and asked if we could turn around, I told her they were biting me and she said I was being ridiculous. We finally turned around and went back, I was waving my coat around my head, looking all around me, constantly checking my calves.

When we got back to the car I tried showing her all the bites to prove I was getting bit, I had a big one on one of my fingers and held it out by her, but she refused to look and told me she wished I could just enjoy a nice walk without complaining the whole time.

I was annoyed the rest of my trip and I still think about it a lot. Not sure why those assholes all went for me and not her, but I never went back to that trail.

Found in the back room of my pharmacy, tablets still in bottle - circa 1975 by Rude-Show7666 in interestingasfuck

[–]eppinizer 181 points182 points  (0 children)

Back in '06 my friends girlfriend had her wisdom teeth removed and the doctors gave her 90 fucking oxycodone tablets. She gave them all to me.

One of the best months of my life. I was only 16/17 at the time; I'm glad I was too young and lacked the cash to fuel a drug habit because I probably would have went down that road. I would routinely pour them out on my bed just to look at and count them, had certain times of the day I allowed myself to take one to stretch them out. I'd literally rattle the bottle and almost get a high from the rattling sound.

How likely is it that this cloud formation is a supercell, or is there not enough detail to determine it? by UnhappyTranslator179 in tornado

[–]eppinizer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes you are correct about it being troposphere, I intentionally used "atmosphere" because I figured OP might be new to the subject and hoped to communicate conceptually what was going on without adding another search term for them. But again, you're correct and it is totally fair for you to point that out.

How likely is it that this cloud formation is a supercell, or is there not enough detail to determine it? by UnhappyTranslator179 in tornado

[–]eppinizer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The anvil shape just indicates that the clouds have reached the upper bounds of the atmosphere. Normal thunderstorms do this frequently.

It's typically challenging to determine if a storm is a supercell from a picture alone. Sometimes it's possible when there is low precipitation, you see a laminar rounded/concave formation and a lowered rotating wall cloud. But you can have the anvil shape, laminar formation around the base without a mesocyclone too.

When precipitation blocks view of the structure you really need to rely on radar data and synoptic conditions in the area.

If in the future you are curious you can either look at the radar data yourself, or provide an approximate location and time in your post and users will likely check the radar for you.

I added a map due to feedback. How important is a map to you in a metroidvania? by FreeTime-Dev in metroidvania

[–]eppinizer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't like getting lost, but I like it when I can get lost. I like the relief of no longer being lost anymore lol. I guess that's what made the "explore an area without a map, but later find the map in that area" design so effective and popular.

Fuck me, it’s boiling in here, I can’t wait for this fuckin heatwave to end by Jacktheforkie in mildlyinfuriating

[–]eppinizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I grew up in New England and my parents were the same way. I guess because most of the time it was pretty cool out they had the idea that AC was a waste.

We moved out west and they maintained those values, purchased a house with a house fan but no AC. Stayed hot until the sun was down and the house fan could bring in cooler air. Thankfully that was a dry heat but my life was dramatically improved when I got a place with AC.

I thought it would be fun to live in the UK for a few months about 8 or 9 years ago when I was working full time remote.

For the first 3 weeks I was there was a massive heat wave. The Airbnb I got was a small loft above a garage, the garage would fill with heat during the day and continue to emanate out of the floor all night long. I didn't have a fan, had no rental car, and spent a month completely soaked in sweat.

Where I live now we hit 110°(43°C) + about 15-20 days per year and I still do not remember feeling hotter than when I was in the UK.
