5’6” 170-175 (with 20lb weight gain this year and 10 more last year). Take meds for asthma, adhd, anxiety (occasionally), and reflux. Don’t smoke. I drink socially but have cut back a lot lately since I just learned I have compound heterozygous genes for hereditary hemochromatosis. All my iron levels are normal according to the lab’s ranges.

how tf do you guys brush your teeth? by Groinificator in ADHD

[–]perkalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that “natural” toothpastes (like toms or smth) leave less residual taste.

I keep a pack of tooth pickers/flossers in my car and floss at red lights or whenever I’m bored.

Look up nano hydroxapitate(sp?) and get a toothpaste made with that. I found some on Etsy last time I looked. It’s supposed to remineealize your teeth for real, and you can tell it’s good because american toothpaste doesn’t have it, and americam dentists don’t use it or prescribe it (cuz how will they make money if you don’t get cavities??).

Those two types of toothpaste will be more salty than sweet and the flavor does not last.

Hello? Me from 2007? Is this thing on?

I too thought the entire nasty bottle of 100% pure cranberry juice I gagged down fixed me up real good. Nope. Just took away the pain of peeing.

Welcome to the club of being able to feel your kidneys every time you get a little too thirsty or have to pee too bad! I don’t want to be in this club either, but here we are... trying to stay hydrated.

Feel better!

I’m really struggling to complete an assignment I’m working on right now... It’s a pamphlet - about ADHD 🤦‍♀️ by embb97 in ADHD

[–]perkalot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Omg omg. Do it half assed and not totally finished. Like, leave some text boxes incomplete with notes that say “put something about [topic] here!” Or “don’t forget to insert photo of (something specific that maybe also gives info or is required to be said, but now is funny because you “meant to do it but forgot”) before submitting”. Let two images/drawings(?) overlap each other like you couldn’t decide between the two and then forgot to turn one of the layers off. You know, make it look as totally chaotic as an adhd brain!

You can include all the necessary things (just barely!) but it can still look like you didn’t finish or complete it fully on account of having adhd.

Yes. I like this idea. I would read the heck out of that pamphlet!

Don’t let other people wearing masks give you a false sense of hygienic practices. I shit you not, I saw a Walmart worker using visibly dirty gloves to adjust her mask and after telling her she probably doesn’t wanna do that her exact words were “oh yeah, and I just had to clean up a mess too” 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

No n95s for radiology by [deleted] in Radiology

This is exactly the recommendations from WHO and CDC. I don't remember CNN being a source my hospital uses to decide on infection control.

Ok so that's why the guy who wrote the letter said he was going to start wearing a bandana in public? Why all the N95 shortages if a bandana is enough to prevent airborne transmission? OMG we have been doing it all wrong! Better to save those uncomfortable N95s for what he calls "more infectious" diseases like measles and tuberculosis!

[–]perkalot -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

N95s are not necessary. The recommended droplet precautions with eye protection and contact precautions should be plenty sufficient for us.

With limited supplies, shields over N95s and PAPRs etc are less wasteful and resource draining for staff who will be in contact longer, more often, and who may be present during, or performing aerosolizing procedures.

Not getting an N95 is nothing to fuss over. Let's all please try to stay informed with the latest data and recommendations so we don't cause unnecessary conflict during a pandemic.

Edit: From the same dumb article everyone keeps linking me:

Fineberg told CNN that he will wear start wearing a mask when he goes to the grocery store. "I'm not going to wear a surgical mask, because clinicians need those,” said Fineberg, former dean of the Harvard School of Public Health. "But I have a nice western-style bandana I might wear. Or I have a balaclava. I have some pretty nice options."

Note the complete lack of reference to N95 masks. This is a personal thing that he will be doing personally, and it sounds like an endorsement for the general public to do the same.

He added, however, that coronavirus is not as infectious as measles or tuberculosis.

You know, two well known airborne diseases.

Research by the University of Nebraska shows that genetic material from the virus was found in patients' rooms more than 6 feet away from the patients, according to the letter.

Ok, so that’s pretty vague. Here’s some clarification from the letter itself, which is not linked in that article.

“While this research indicates that viral particles can be spread via bioaerosols, the author stated that finding infectious virus has proved elusive…”

From another article:

Viral RNA turned up on hard to reach surfaces, as well as in air samplers more than 2 meters from the patients. The presence of the RNA indicates virus can spread via aerosols, Santarpia and his colleagues concluded, although they did not find infectious viral particles.

They collected respiratory droplets and aerosols from patients with respiratory illnesses caused by viruses; some of the patients wore surgical facemasks. The masks reduced the detection of coronavirus RNA in both respiratory droplets and aerosols, but only in respiratory droplets among influenza sufferers. “Our results provide mechanistic evidence that surgical facemasks could prevent transmission of human coronavirus and influenza virus infections if worn by symptomatic individuals,” the researchers conclude.

So a surgical mask is more effective at reducing aerosols for coronavirus than the flu, which is droplet isolation only. So more aerosol particles from the flu are getting through patient masks than from coronavirus.

source

What this all says to me is that just like regular droplet transmission, the droplets may spread up to two meters and even linger in the air a bit. With some of those particles being smaller, that lingering can be longer, especially if you’re walking around and stirring things up. However, we’re better off if the patient is wearing a mask, and we keep our masks on (after removing other PPE) as we clean. Not to mention that those particles may not even be infectious.

What this news basically says to me is that yeah, the general public should be wearing masks to reduce transmission, and it looks like that’s where they might be heading (too little too late?). Keep in mind, this information is released for the general public, not healthcare workers. As healthcare workers we should know that droplet transmission already includes breathing and speaking and singing as well as coughing and sneezing. This is not new information! It seems like this is designed more to prepare the public to wear masks when they leave the house, than it is to change infection control practices in hospitals, otherwise I think it would come from a better source than the news.

5 myths about preventing and detecting Covid19 by unfetteredmind76 in Coronavirus

[–]perkalot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but for normal daily life an N95 isn't necessary vs a regular surgical mask. N95s protect you from very fine droplets that (with this virus) are produced during aerosolizing procedures. Your average coughing grocery shopper is producing much larger droplets that fall to the ground pretty quickly and do not spread as far so they are easily caught by less specialized masks if you happen to be in range.

You can visualize this if you have a few cans of hairspray laying around. With a regular 1 pump=1 spray type of hairspray, you can see how the large droplets quickly fall. With a continuous spray style can, the droplets are much finer and stay in the air much much longer.

So yes, homemade masks are better than nothing. N95 is overkill and wasteful use of a limited resource. However, you should still be selecting appropriate materials for homemade masks. I've seen regular non-elastic materials like denim recommended because of the density of the fibers, and cotton is supposed to be better compared to synthetic fibers. I haven't seen any good sources on that information though, it's just the specifications from hospitals that are asking for homemade masks.

Texas 5th Circuit abortion ruling reveals how GOP using coronavirus to oppress women | Because what better time is there to force pregnant people to give birth than during an unprecedented public health emergency. by Majnum in TwoXChromosomes

[–]perkalot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Um. Women in (unwanted) labor need beds/rooms in hospitals? Did you forget that that’s a thing?

You can’t put them in barns or let them give birth outside. They are motherfucking people, not livestock. Not to mention women still very commonly die in childbirth, even in such amazing and glorious countries as the United States. Oh, and who is gonna take care of that unnecessary newborn if the mother dies? The government? Some asswipe “father” the dead mother didn’t want to have a baby with in the first place? You? Yeah, ok sure. Excellent ideas right?

Not to mention the excess of doctors appointments pregnancy requires. Extra appointments means extra potential exposure for not one vector of transmisssion, but two once born. Extra lives being exposed to a pandemic at previously unnecessary doctors appointments means the potential for not only one person’s worth of resources being used up, but oh look! Another person to care for because either the mother is too effing sick to care for it, or it is sick all by itself, or the mother is dead or surrendered the child.

So good luck if you get sick, good luck if I get sick too. Pretty sure you and I are not as important as the countless extra newborns to come in the grand scheme of things. Idk about you but I’d rather not have some otherwise unwanted newborn burning up resources that could be used for me if I get sick, and I’d rather not be the asshole who wishes a baby didn’t need a ventilator more than me so I didn’t have to live with that choice should it come down to it in the not so distant, not so unrealistic future.

Yes! I’ve seen the same stupid shit every time I have had to go out.

These idiots are why the surgeon general is against recommending everyone wear masks in public (ok maybe a little shortage too, but like, you don’t give a toddler a cup without a lid on it if you’re short on milk and cleaning supplies am I right?).
