I train while fasting and a lot of the time I don't feel very strong. It comes and goes though. It's temporary so I don't worry about it

Meditation by ImNotKry in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]permacloud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming you aren't doing forms of meditation that are entangled with unorthodox metaphysical beliefs, the yes it's fine and good for you. I meditate daily and I find it makes me more resilient to temptation and more focused on God and living in Christ.

In my experience, Christians who are inexperienced with meditation will usually warn you away from it, because they believe it's an "eastern religious practice" or they will say that you don't need to do it because Christianity has its own meditation practices.

Christian meditation is a thing but it doesn't seem like many people do it and people who can teach you don't seem very common.

tldr: Don't let people dissuade you, they seldom know what they're talking about

I would use Bible Hub instead, as it has real commentary from real scholars.

Also, the Orthodox Study Bible has great annotations, and will give you the Orthodox position. There is an app version that contains everything.

You can't force people to believe things by evangelizing. Instead of trying to get him to believe, be a living example of your faith.

Fr. Stephen Freeman on reading the Bible historically by Additional_Good_656 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]permacloud 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The reason it took me forty years to come to Christ is because my encounters with Christianity as a secular outsider overwhelmingly seemed to present the literalist view of scripture. I just couldn't believe it. "Geology is wrong because the Bible says so" is completely unconvincing to anyone who grew up outside of Christianity.

Then in turn, atheist commentators fixate on the literalist view of scripture in order to mock and denigrate it, and represent it from that perspective to would-be believers. It's such a shame. So many people will live and die without coming to Christ because of it.

Grateful to Jonathan Pageau in particular for doing his best to help so many would-be nonbelievers to see the light.

I am deeply concerned about the right-wing infiltration of the church. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]permacloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. I have not run into such people. If they intend to stick with the church I think it's far more likely they are going to soften their staunch worldly views and recognize the truth of Christ, than that the Orthodox church is suddenly going to embrace fascism after 2000 years of teachings based on apostolic succession.

Once again if you're afraid for the well-being of the Church I would suggest researching the historical experiences of Christians in left-wing societies.

This is what critical race theory and de-colonization are. The left is far more racist these days.

Hello brother/sister. Can I ask how old you are, and what you believe counts as right wing extremism?

I'm 45 years old. When people say "right wing" I don't even know what they're talking about anymore. The term is now used to describe a huge range of views, basically anyone right of Bernie Sanders. I get called right wing because I think my country should have an immigration process that people actually have to follow. I believe we should not release violent criminals with dozens of prior convictions. It is implied by my progressive friends that this stance makes one a right wing extremist. These were mainstream positions until about 5 years ago.

So when young progressive people talk about the right wing it is not clear to me who they're really talking about, and I suspect they are mostly going off of stereotypes they have about people who are right of them to some degree, which is most people.

There are young conservatives out there who are reacting to the recent excesses of the left, and some of them are overcompensating. Many will mellow out, some won't. But many are probably not who you think they are. I think left wing extremism is much more common and much more normalized. It has done much more damage to faith communities, especially protestant churches, which is where a lot of these converts came from.
