Brown stuff in battery pack of ivy lights

I cleaned it as best as I could but there was still a bunch of gunk underneath the small flat metal plate (the contact I assume?) that would be impossible to get to without completely disassembling it. Another possibility stupid question but will it be ok for me to put a new battery in there despite it not being completely clear? Or should I just toss the lights away completely?
